Chapter 3 - The Tower of Glass

The Manhattan skyline rose out of the late afternoon haze like a forest of black iron and silver glass.

The helicopter descended rapidly toward the private helipad atop the seventy-story Vance Global Plaza. Below them, the streets were a chaotic grid of yellow taxis and tiny, moving dots of people, completely divorced from the quiet dirt roads Maya was used to.

As the aircraft touched down, the side door slid open automatically. Waiting on the windy roof stood a team of six men in matching dark gray suits, led by an older man with sharp blue eyes and silver hair.

"That's Arthur Harrison," Ethan whispered to Maya, helping her unbuckle. "My father's most trusted lawyer and the head of the audit committee. He’s the only person in that building Eleanor couldn't buy."

Ethan stepped out first, holding Lily securely against his side, shielded from the high rooftop wind by his wide frame. He turned and reached out his hand to pull Maya down onto the asphalt.

Arthur Harrison stepped forward, his eyes immediately darting to the little girl in Ethan’s arms, then to Maya. A look of profound relief crossed the old lawyer's face.

"Ethan," Arthur said, his voice raised over the fading whine of the engine. "She’s in the boardroom right now. She’s convened eleven of the thirteen board members. She’s presenting a falsified medical report from a private clinic in Zurich claiming you’ve suffered a psychological breakdown."

"Where is the Sterling family?" Ethan asked, walking briskly toward the reinforced glass doors leading into the top-floor penthouse suite.

"Victoria Sterling and her father are sitting in the executive waiting room," Arthur replied, keeping pace with Ethan's long strides. "They brought three corporate attorneys. They smell blood in the water. They know if Eleanor takes control today, they can force the merger on terms that heavily favor Sterling Enterprise."

Maya walked beside Ethan, her hand clamped tight in his. Her simple floral dress and faded denim jacket looked entirely out of place against the polished white marble walls and bronze sculptures of the penthouse foyer, but she held her head up. She remembered Uncle David’s words: Let people know the truth.

They moved down a private corridor lined with security personnel who bowed their heads respectfully as Ethan passed. None of them dared to intercept him.

At the end of the hall stood two massive double doors made of frosted glass and brushed steel. Outside stood two heavy-set guards wearing Vance Global security badges.

"Step aside," Ethan commanded quietly.

The guards looked at each other, visibly sweating. "Mr. Vance... your mother gave explicit instructions that the board session was closed—"

Ethan didn't wait for the guard to finish his sentence. He stepped forward, pressed his palm against the biometric scanner beside the door, and shoved the heavy steel doors wide open with a sharp, echoing slam.

The conversation inside the glass boardroom stopped instantly.

Around an oval table made of dark, polished mahogany sat twelve men and women in tailored executive suits. At the head of the table sat Eleanor Vance. She was holding a pen over a set of legal documents, her white suit still immaculate, though her eyes were wild and red-rimmed.

Beside her sat a young woman with sleek, platinum-blonde hair and a cold, aristocratic face—Victoria Sterling—and her father, a heavy-set man in his sixties with a thick silver mustache.

"Ethan!" Eleanor gasped, standing up so quickly her leather chair rolled back against the floor-to-ceiling windows. "What is the meaning of this intrusion?! You are currently subject to an emergency administrative leave—"

"Shut your mouth, Eleanor," Ethan said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly clear.

He walked straight to the center of the room, pulled out the high-backed leather chair reserved for the Chief Executive Officer, and helped Maya sit down in it. Then, he stood behind her, his hand resting firmly on her shoulder, while holding Lily in his other arm.

The board members stared in total, stunned silence.

"Who is this woman?" Mr. Sterling snapped, standing up and adjusting his silk tie. "Ethan, what is this circus? We are forty-five minutes away from finalizing the debt-restructuring agreement!"

Ethan picked up the remote control on the conference table and tapped the black screen. The massive wall-mounted display behind Eleanor flickered to life.

High-resolution scans of the half-burnt stationary appeared on the screen, accompanied by a forensic document analysis report bearing the official seal of the New York State Police Department.

"This," Ethan said, pointing a finger at the screen, "is a letter written fifteen months ago by Maya Lin—my wife."

A sharp intake of breath rippled across the room.

Victoria Sterling’s face turned completely white. "Your... what?"

"We were married in secret by a justice of the peace in Burlington, Vermont, sixteen months ago," Ethan declared, his eyes locking onto his mother's frozen face. "Before my father died. Before I was dragged back into this building. Maya is my legal wife under the laws of the State of Vermont. And this child..."

He raised Lily slightly, letting the bright boardroom lights illuminate her face.

"...is Lily Vance. The sole biological heir to the Vance family estate."

Eleanor gripped the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles turning bone-white. "She’s a liar! She’s an opportunist from a white-trash town who trapped you—"

"The DNA analysis was conducted three hours ago using a rapid-sequencing lab at the medical center," Arthur Harrison interrupted cleanly, stepping forward with a signed medical affidavit. "The probability of paternity is ninety-nine point nine percent. Furthermore, the district attorney has just issued a subpoena for Mrs. Eleanor Vance regarding the destruction of private mail, corporate forgery, and illegal wiretapping."

Two uniformed NYPD officers stepped through the open boardroom doors behind Ethan.

The room erupted into absolute chaos.
