Chapter 4 - The Vipers Strike Back

By Wednesday afternoon, the narrative surrounding the Vance family had spiraled into an all-out public relations war.
Inside a luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Boston, Victoria Vance sat across from a stylish, sharp-tongued PR consultant named Genevieve Vance—a distant cousin who ran a boutique high-society crisis management firm.
Arthur sat on the leather sofa, clutching a tumbler of neat whiskey, his face dark and brooding.
"We need to flip the narrative immediately," Genevieve said, pacing across the hardwood floor, tapping her tablet. "Clara has the local press eating out of her hand with this whole 'protective mother' routine. The newspapers are calling her a courageous whistleblower."
"She’s an unhinged, vindictive liar!" Victoria spat, her hands trembling as she set her coffee cup down. "She manipulated her father! She took advantage of Richard’s declining health to force him into signing that corporate suspension order!"
"That’s our angle," Genevieve said, stopping in her tracks, her eyes lighting up with mercenary brilliance. "We frame Clara as an unstable, estranged daughter who used a minor, exaggerated domestic misunderstanding to orchestrate a corporate hostile takeover."
Arthur looked up, interested. "Can we pull that off?"
"Easily," Genevieve smiled coldly. "We launch an anonymous media campaign pointing out that Clara has a history of emotional instability following her divorce two years ago. We leak stories to high-society blogs claiming she’s an unfit mother who suffers from severe postpartum psychosis and paranoid delusions."
Victoria leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with desperate ambition. "And Gigi?"
"We file a counter-petition in family court challenging Clara’s maternal fitness," Genevieve explained ruthlessly. "We claim that Clara fabricated the bruise on Gigi’s face using cosmetics to set up Arthur, and that she is using the child as a human shield to extort the family trust."
Arthur grinned—a sinister, ugly smile that restored his wounded arrogance. "If we challenge her fitness, the court will order a psychological evaluation. We buy the psychologist, get Gigi placed into temporary protective custody with Mother, and force Clara to sign away her corporate claims to get her daughter back."
"Brilliant," Victoria whispered, her face glowing with twisted relief. "That will teach her to respect this family. She wanted a war? We will take her child from her."
Three miles away, inside her cozy, sunlit apartment overlooking a quiet Boston park, Clara was sitting on the rug, helping Gigi stack colorful wooden blocks.
Gigi’s cheek had healed remarkably well, leaving only a faint, barely visible shadow where the red mark had been. She was laughing freely, clapping her small hands every time a tower of blocks fell over.
Clara’s phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was Evelyn.
Clara answered, placing it on speaker. "Hi, Evelyn."
"Clara," Evelyn’s voice came through, tense and alert. "My media monitoring team just flagged four high-society blogs and local news outlets. Genevieve Vance’s PR firm has just launched a smear campaign against you."
Clara didn't panic. She calmly picked up a blue block, handing it to Gigi. "What are they saying?"
"They’re claiming you fabricated Gigi’s injury using theatrical makeup," Evelyn reported. "They’re alleging that you suffer from severe mental instability stemming from your divorce, and they’ve just filed an emergency petition in Probate Court requesting temporary guardianship of Gigi be transferred to your mother, Victoria."
Clara’s hand paused over the building blocks. A cold, dangerous stillness settled over her heart.
They weren't just trying to protect their money anymore. They were coming for her child.
"Are they relying on Dr. Lin’s medical report?" Clara asked softly.
"They’re attempting to discredit Dr. Lin, claiming she is a personal friend of yours who falsified the pediatric audit," Evelyn explained. "Their hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning before Judge Sarah Sterling—a judge who happens to be a long-time member of Victoria’s country club."
Clara stood up from the floor, walking over to her desk where her laptop sat open.
"They think Judge Sterling is going to help them because of country club loyalty?" Clara asked, her voice dropping into a register of lethal clarity.
"That's their plan," Evelyn admitted. "Victoria has already reached out to Sterling’s chief of staff."
Clara opened a secondary folder on her laptop marked: Judicial & PR Network Discrepancies.
"Evelyn," Clara said, tapping her keyboard rapidly. "Do you remember when I told you I had been saving files for three years?"
"Yes..." Evelyn replied, curious.
"I didn't just save files on Arthur’s embezzlement," Clara revealed, a cold, sharp smile touching her lips. "I saved the financial records of every country club donation my father made over the last decade. Including a forty-thousand-dollar 'charitable contribution' made directly to Judge Sarah Sterling’s campaign fund two weeks before she ruled in favor of Vance Logistics in an industrial zoning lawsuit."
Silence held on Evelyn’s end of the line for three seconds.
Then, Evelyn let out a low, breathless laugh. "Clara... you are an absolute tactical masterpiece."
"They wanted to play dirty, Evelyn," Clara said, looking across the room at her daughter, who was happily building another block tower. "They think because they have money and connections, they can break a mother."

She closed her laptop with a sharp, decisive click.
"Recuse Judge Sterling tonight. Send the campaign donation records directly to the Judicial Conduct Commission. And tell Genevieve Vance that her PR firm is about to be audited by the IRS."
