Chapter 8 - The Step into the Light

Two weeks later, Vanguard Dynamics held its annual global stakeholder gala in New York City.

The event was held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, decorated with breathtaking arrangements of deep blue orchids and warm golden lighting. Over five hundred world leaders, tech innovators, and international journalists filled the room.

This time, I didn't wear a modest light blue dress chosen by someone else.

I wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown with an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline, my hair styled in soft waves falling over my shoulders.

And I wasn't sitting at Table Nineteen.

I was sitting at Table One—the head table—right beside Emmett.

When the time came for the main address, Emmett walked up to the podium under a wave of thunderous applause. He adjusted the microphone, looked out over the vast sea of influential faces, and smiled.

"Before I begin my remarks tonight," Emmett spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing powerfully through the hall, "I want to make a special announcement regarding the future leadership of Vanguard Dynamics."

The room grew quiet with anticipation.

"For the past two years," Emmett continued, "the vision, the core philosophy, and the public voice of this company have been guided by a brilliant mind working behind the scenes. Today, I am proud to formally announce that Jenna Hayes has accepted the position of Vice President of Global Strategic Communications and Brand Vision for Vanguard Dynamics."

The spotlight swung away from the stage and landed directly on me.

The entire ballroom burst into a standing ovation. High-ranking executives from across the world turned to applaud me, their eyes filled with genuine respect and admiration.

I stood up slowly, gracefully acknowledging the crowd, feeling the cool silk of my gown against my skin.

Across the room, near the press balcony, I caught sight of a familiar face.

It was a freelance financial journalist who worked closely with Nicholas’s old firm. He was staring at me with his mouth wide open, frantically snapping photos on his camera, realizing that the sister Nicholas had banished to the kids' table was now one of the most powerful executives in the green-tech industry.

I didn't gloat. I simply offered a gracious smile, turned back to the stage, and watched Emmett deliver the speech I had written for him—a speech about integrity, courage, and building a world where truth always prevails.
