Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

Judge Holbrook’s gavel hovered in mid-air. Her sharp eyes darted from my face to the white-faced family sitting at the counsel table.

"Ms. Vance?" Judge Holbrook asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "You are alive."

"Very much alive, Your Honor," I replied, stepping up to the wooden podium before the bench, placing my leather briefcase on the surface. "And fully prepared to present evidence of forgery, perjury, and attempted murder."

"Your Honor! This is an outrage!" Harrison Croft shouted, frantically stepping forward, his confident demeanor completely crumbling. "Ms. Vance is suffering from severe head trauma following a tragic accident! She is mentally unstable and has no standing to interrupt these proceedings!"

"Sit down, Mr. Croft!" Judge Holbrook barked, slamming her gavel with enough force to echo down the hallway outside. BANG! "If Ms. Vance is the named beneficiary in a competing estate document, she has absolute standing in this court! Ms. Vance, approach the bench."

My father took a frantic step toward the podium. "Maya... darling... you're confused! We've been searching for you everywhere!"

I didn't even look at him. I opened my briefcase, pulled out a thick, blue-bound legal document bearing a golden notary seal, and handed it directly to the court clerk.

"Your Honor," I stated, "I submit to the court the true Last Will and Testament of Arthur Vance, executed on August 12th, 2023—eighteen months after the fraudulent document presented by my father."

The clerk passed the document up to the judge.

Judge Holbrook opened the file, her eyes scanning the pages rapidly. "This document bears the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court Trust Registry, witnessed by senior partner David Sterling of Sterling & Sterling LLP."

"That document is a fake!" my mother shrieked from the table, losing all her aristocratic composure, standing up and pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. "She forged it! She stole from our family!"

"Silence in my courtroom, Mrs. Vance!" Judge Holbrook warned sternly. "Or I will have the bailiff remove you immediately!"

"Your Honor," I continued smoothly, gesturing to Aunt Victoria, who stepped forward with her binder. "The 2021 document presented by Mr. Croft features the forged witness signature of Dr. Julian Vance. We have submitted airline records and passport stamps proving Dr. Julian was in international waters on the day he supposedly witnessed that document."

Croft turned around, glaring fiercely at my father. "Richard... is this true?"

My father stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead, his bandaged hand shaking violently. "It... it was a formal re-signing! A administrative formality!"

"And furthermore, Your Honor," I said, leaning toward the microphone, "I submit a certified forensic audio-visual recording taken twelve hours ago at a hangar in Teterboro Airport."

Elena stepped forward, plugging a flash drive into the courtroom media system.

The large flat-screen monitors mounted on the courtroom walls lit up instantly.

The crystal-clear infrared video played before the entire gallery: Lucas Vance handing over a metal box of bearer bonds to Victor Vance, his high-pitched voice booming through the courtroom speakers: "Your father's usefulness has expired... make sure she doesn't leave the courthouse alive!"

Gasps erupted from the gallery! The reporters began scribbling furiously on their pads. Executives from Vance Enterprises stared at Lucas in utter disgust.

Lucas collapsed back into his chair, pressing his hands over his face, sobbing hysterically.

My father turned on his own son, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage. "You little traitor! You stole my bearer bonds?!"

"You tried to kill my sister, Dad!" Lucas screamed back, completely cracking under the pressure. "You rammed her car into a ditch! You told Mom she was worth more dead than alive!"

The entire courtroom erupted into chaotic shouting!

Judge Holbrook slammed her gavel repeatedly, her face red with fury. BANG! BANG! BANG!

"ORDER IN THE COURT! BAILIFFS, SECURE THE DOORS!"

In the middle of the noise and panic, two federal marshals stepped up behind my father and mother, pulling silver handcuffs from their belts.

"Richard Vance, Victoria Vance, Lucas Vance," the lead marshal announced loudly, his voice cutting through the chaos. "You are under arrest by federal warrant for wire fraud, bankruptcy fraud, criminal conspiracy, and attempted premeditated murder."

My mother shrieked as the steel cuff clicked shut around her delicate wrist. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!"

My father didn't fight. He stood paralyzed as the cuffs locked behind his back, his hollow eyes staring at me in complete, unyielding disbelief.

As the marshals began escorting my family down the central aisle in chains, my father paused beside my podium.

"Maya..." he whispered, his voice dry and trembling. "We are your parents... how could you do this to your own blood?"

May you like

I leaned in close to him, looking straight into the cold, empty eyes of the man who had tried to crush me in a dark ditch.

"You told me I was worth more dead than alive, Dad," I said in a whisper that only he could hear. "You were wrong. I'm worth infinitely more standing right here."
