Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

"Let's talk about the money, Eleanor," AUSA Rostova said, opening a secondary ledger. "Yesterday afternoon, your defense team attempted to wire four million dollars from an account at Vanguard Alpha in the Caymans to a private defense fund in Zurich. That wire transfer was intercepted by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network."

Jason looked at his lawyer, his eyes wide with a sudden, animalistic panic. "Robert, what is she talking about? You said that account was untraceable!"

Robert Stone didn't look at his client. He was staring at the federal prosecutor, his mind calculating his own legal liability. "My firm was unaware of any foreign sanctions on those specific assets, Your Honor... I mean, counsel. We acted on the instructions of our clients."

"Your clients are broke, Mr. Stone," Rostova said smoothly. "As of six-thirty this morning, the federal government has seized the Sterling residence in Lake Forest under the federal asset forfeiture statutes regarding corporations involved in transnational criminal activity. The vehicles, the bank accounts, the commercial real estate—it’s all gone. The Sterling Group no longer exists."

Eleanor stood up, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "You can't do this! My grandfather built that company! You're an old dirt-picker!" she screamed, pointing her finger at me, the high-society veneer completely shattering. "You cut my lawn! You cleaned my gutters! You’re nothing but a servant!"

"I was a servant to this country for thirty-two years, Eleanor," I said softly, standing up from my chair. The full height of my frame, hardened by decades of combat training, cast a long shadow over the table. "And the one thing they teach you in my line of work is that when you find a weed in the garden, you don't just trim the leaves."

I walked around the table, stopping just inches from Jason. The young man who had held a baseball bat against my daughter shrunk back into his leather chair, his hands shaking.

"You struck my daughter," I whispered to him, the silence in the room so absolute that everyone could hear his ragged breathing. "You held her down while your mother cut away her dignity. You thought because I didn't have a luxury car or a country club membership, I couldn't protect her."

I reached out, my large hand gently tapping the brass medals on my uniform chest. "These aren't for decoration, Jason. They’re for survival. And you wouldn't last five minutes in the world I built."

The door to the conference room opened, and two federal marshals stepped inside, their leather duty belts creaking.

"Arthur and Eleanor Sterling, Jason Sterling," the lead marshal said, pulling out a pair of warrants. "You are under arrest for federal conspiracy and transport of illicit electronics. Please step forward and place your hands behind your back."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Jason’s wrists, he looked at his mother, his face streaked with tears of terrified realization. Eleanor didn't cry; she stood frozen, her eyes locked on me as she was led out of the room, her empire stripped away, her name ruined, and her future reduced to a cold concrete cell.
