Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

The retaliation began less than forty-eight hours later.
I had briefly returned home to shower, change my clothes, and grab clean garments for Emily. As I turned onto my quiet residential street, I was met by a wall of news vans, flashing camera lights, and reporters holding microphones.
When I stepped out of my truck, a reporter shoved a microphone toward my face. "Mr. Mercer! Is it true you have a history of violent outbursts?"
"Mr. Mercer, how do you respond to allegations that you broke into the Waverly estate while intoxicated and assaulted their staff?"
"Is your daughter suffering from severe addiction issues, as the Waverly family claims?"
I pushed past the horde of reporters without saying a word, my heart boiling with rage. I slammed my front door shut and locked it. Turning on the local morning news, I saw my own face displayed on the screen next to a mugshot-style photo from twenty years ago.
"In breaking news local business owner Thomas Mercer is under fire following a violent midnight home invasion at the prestigious Waverly estate in Cedar Falls," the news anchor announced. "Spokespersons for the Waverly family claim Mercer has a long-documented history of rage issues and financial desperation, alleging he attempted to extort the prominent shipping family before forcibly taking his daughter, who they claim was receiving voluntary psychiatric treatment..."
They were controlling the narrative. They were painting me as a violent, unhinged lunatic and Emily as a sick, delusional addict.
An hour later, my phone rang. It was my bank manager.
"Tom... I'm so sorry to call you with this," the manager said nervously. "We just received notice from our compliance department. Due to pending legal claims and an emergency civil injunction filed by Waverly Transit's legal team, your business line of credit and personal accounts have been temporarily frozen."
"They froze my accounts? On what grounds?!" I demanded.
"They've filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against you for property destruction, corporate defamation, and emotional distress," the manager explained softly. "Until the judge reviews the injunction, your assets are tied up."
They were trying to starve me out. They wanted to make sure I couldn't afford a defense attorney, couldn't pay Emily’s medical bills, and couldn't keep my tow business running.
Suddenly, my front window shattered.
A heavy brick flew through the glass, landing with a loud thud on my living room rug. Wrapped around the brick was a printed note in bold black letters:
KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT OR THE NEXT ONE BURNS THE HOUSE DOWN.

I picked up the brick, looking out the broken window at a black SUV speeding away down the street. They thought terrorizing me in my own home would force me to back down. They thought a working-class man would bow to wealthy bullies.
They didn't know that when you take away everything a man has to lose, you make him completely unstoppable.
