Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for precisely forty-two minutes.

When the court reconvened at 4:00 PM, the atmosphere in Courtroom 3B was electric. I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Chief Miller and my driver David. I wore a bright crimson coat, my head held high, my posture straight and unyielding.

Marcus and Rachel stood at the defense table, held up almost entirely by their attorneys.

"Members of the jury," Judge Reynolds asked. "Have you reached a unanimous verdict?"

The jury foreman, a tall, stern-faced veteran with graying hair, stood up and held a slip of paper. "We have, Your Honor."

"On the first count of Felony Aggravated Assault with Great Bodily Injury, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"

"Guilty," the foreman announced clearly.

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Rachel let out a muffled scream.

"On the second count of First-Degree Elder Financial Exploitation and Extortion, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"

"Guilty."

"On the third count of Felony Extortion and Forgery, how do you find the defendant, Rachel Vance?"

"Guilty."

"On the fourth count of Accessory to Aggravated Felony Assault and Elder Abuse, how do you find the defendant, Rachel Vance?"

"Guilty."

Count by count, the verdict echoed through the courtroom like a series of hammer blows. Eight counts in total. Eight guilty verdicts.

Judge Reynolds signed the verdict forms and looked down at the convicted felons. There was no mercy in her eyes.

"Marcus Vance, Rachel Vance, step forward for sentencing," Judge Reynolds ordered.

The siblings stood trembling before the bench.

"You were blessed with a mother who sacrificed her life, her health, and her youth to give you every advantage in this world," Judge Reynolds said, her voice dripping with profound disdain. "And in return, when she was old and vulnerable, you treated her with a level of savage cruelty that revolts the human conscience. You did not see a mother; you saw a bank account to be looted by force."

Judge Reynolds slammed her hand onto the bench.

"Marcus Vance, I sentence you to eighteen years in the State Maximum Security Penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for twelve years."

Marcus slumped, two deputies catching him under his arms before he hit the floor.

"Rachel Vance, I sentence you to ten years in the State Women’s Correctional Facility, with no possibility of parole for six years. Furthermore, both defendants are ordered to pay full restitution and are subject to a permanent, lifetime order of protection forbidding any contact, direct or indirect, with Eleanor Vance."

Judge Reynolds brought her gavel down one final time. CRACK.

"Court is adjourned."

As the deputies dragged Marcus and Rachel away toward the holding cells, Rachel turned her tear-streaked face toward me one last time. "Mom! Please! Don't leave us in here! Mom!"

I stood up from my seat. I looked into her eyes—not with hatred, not with rage, but with a profound, terrifying emptiness.

I turned my back on them and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
