Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Ashford Dynamics

The repercussions of Vivian’s press statement hit Thatcher like a freight train.

Inside the boardroom of Ashford Dynamics, the air was suffocating. Thatcher sat at the head of the conference table, staring at his computer screen. The stock price of his private venture had plummeted into non-existence. Board members and early-stage angel investors were shouting over one another, demanding his immediate resignation.

“Thatcher! The public relations nightmare is destroying us!” one senior director yelled, slamming his hand on the table. “Three major enterprise clients canceled their software subscriptions this morning! They don't want to be associated with a man who lets his child burn with fever so he can sip scotch with investors!”

“It was blown out of proportion!” Thatcher pleaded, his voice breaking. “Vivian manipulated the media! She’s trying to destroy me!”

“No, Thatcher, you destroyed yourself,” another investor said disgustedly. “And without Vanguard Capital guaranteeing your four-million-dollar debt line due this Friday, this company is insolvent. We are voting to remove you as CEO immediately.”

“You can’t remove me! I founded this company!” Thatcher stood up, kicking his chair back.

“We just did,” the director replied coldly. “Security will escort you from the building.”

Thatcher walked out of his own corporate headquarters thirty minutes later, holding a single cardboard box containing his desk items. His phone rang. It was Beatrix.

“Thatcher!” his mother shrieked through the speaker. “There are movers at the gate! They have a court eviction order signed by a judge! They are putting my antique furniture on the lawn! You need to fix this!”

Thatcher felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He got into his sports car—a car whose lease was registered under Vanguard Management—and turned the key.

Instead of starting, the dashboard screen flashed red: VEHICLE REPOSSESSED - REMOTE IGNITION DISABLED.

Thatcher slammed his hands against the steering wheel in rage, tears of frustration boiling in his eyes. He was stranded on the sidewalk in front of his former company, stripped of his title, his car, his wealth, and his home.

He pulled out his personal phone and tried to transfer funds from his personal savings account to hire an Uber.

For the first time in his life, Thatcher felt the cold, unyielding wall of true powerlessness. He had spent years believing he was superior to Vivian, believing that his family name, his charm, and his social standing made him the master of their life.

He had never realized that he was merely a child playing in a palace built entirely by the quiet, resilient woman he had treated like a temporary guest.
