Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLING EMPIRE

The flashing blue and red lights of six federal utility vehicles illuminated the interior of Hangar 3, turning the glass walls into a kaleidoscopic display of authority. A team of eight FBI tactical agents, led by a sharp-faced Special Agent named Harris, moved into the space with weapons drawn, their boots clicking perfectly against the concrete.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" Harris shouted, his voice amplified by a megaphone.
Sterling didn't even attempt to protest. He threw his hands in the air, his expensive wool coat slipping off his shoulders as he leaned against the aluminum steps of the jet. Laura began to scream, dropping to her knees, her hands covering her face as two female agents stepped forward to cuff her.
Evelyn stood rigid, her eyes fixed on me as an agent stepped behind her, pulling her small, manicured wrists into steel restraints. Even as they locked the metal around her skin, she didn't look down. She glared at me with a hatred so pure it felt like a physical heat in the cold hangar.
"This isn't over, Marcus," she hissed as they led her past me toward the waiting vehicles. "Lawyers will have me out by morning. You can't hold me."
"They're not state charges, Evelyn," Special Agent Harris said, stepping into her path with a thick stack of federal arrest warrants. "These are Title 18 racketeering and international child exploitation charges. There is no bail schedule for this docket. You're going to McCreary Federal Penitentiary."
Harris turned to me, his expression softening slightly as he looked at my uniform jacket. "Sergeant Mercer, your friend Miller sent us the coordinate logs. Where is the child?"
"She’s safe in the van, sir," I said, lowering my weapon and placing it on the hood of the Mercedes. "She’s had a long night."
"We’ll need her statement at the field office tomorrow afternoon, but for tonight, take her home," Harris said, giving me a respectful nod. "The Department of Children and Family Services has already issued an emergency protective order based on the transcripts your friend provided. Full custody remains with you."
I walked out of the hangar, the freezing sleet hitting my face, but the air suddenly felt clean. The weight that had been pressing against my chest since I stepped through my front door three hours ago had finally lifted.
When I opened the side door of Sam’s utility van, Sophie was sitting up, her eyes wide as she watched the federal convoy clear the tarmac. She looked at me, then looked down at my hands to make sure I was okay.
"Is it over, Dad?" she asked, her voice a tiny whisper against the rumble of the van’s heater.
"It’s over, Sophie," I said, climbing into the back and pulling her into a tight, warm embrace. "They can never touch you again. I promise."

Sam looked back from the driver's seat, his scarred face relaxing into a smile. "Where to now, Commander?"
"Let's go back to the base, Sam," I said, looking out at the highway lights cutting through the white storm. "Let's go somewhere where the fences are built to keep the bad guys out, not in."
