Chapter 10 - The Magic of Light

That evening, after the birthday party had wrapped up and the guests had left, the house quieted down into a peaceful twilight.
David was downstairs reading in the living room, while I sat on the edge of Nancy’s bed, tucking her in beneath her favorite plush pink blanket.
At eight years old, Nancy was glowing with health, confidence, and joy. The trauma of her fifth year was a distant, faded memory, replaced by years of love, security, and happiness.
“Mommy?” Nancy asked softly, her big brown eyes looking up at me as she clutched her favorite stuffed teddy bear.
“Yes, my sweet girl?” I whispered, brushing a stray lock of golden hair from her forehead.
“Do you remember when I was little, and I thought there were little fish swimming inside my tummy?” she asked quietly.
My heart gave a soft, warm tug, but there was no fear left in the memory—only the triumph of survival.
“I remember, baby,” I said gently.
Nancy smiled, wrapping her small arms around my neck, pulling me into a tight, warm hug.
“I know now that there weren't any magic fish,” Nancy whispered against my shoulder. “It was just a bad thing that happened. But you saved me, Mommy. You’re my real superhero.”
I held my daughter close against my chest, feeling her steady, healthy heartbeat against mine, tears of pure happiness welling in my eyes.
“I’ll always save you, Nancy,” I whispered, kissing her soft cheek. “Every single time.”
I pulled the covers up to her chin, switched on her small star-shaped nightlight, and stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the dark, beautiful expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
The ocean waves crashed gently against the shore below, sparkling under a vast canopy of bright, brilliant stars.
Five years ago, I was a terrified, isolated mother standing in a dark alley of doubt, accused by my husband, targeted by a predator, and watching my daughter fight for her life.
Tonight, I was a free, strong, independent woman, married to a man who cherished me, running a successful business, and raising a healthy, happy daughter who knew she was loved beyond measure.

I took a deep breath of the fresh, salty ocean air, feeling the warm night breeze on my face.
The darkness had tried to swallow my family whole. But light, truth, and a mother’s fierce, unyielding love had won the war. And as I looked up at the endless stars stretching across the California sky, I knew that our future was finally, beautiful bright.
