Chapter 6 - The Assault on Reston

With Senator Vance arrested and Neil singing like a canary to avoid the death penalty, the final stronghold was Vanguard Bio-Technologies’ subterranean facility in Reston, Virginia.
At 4:00 AM on Thursday morning, a joint tactical force comprising FBI Hostage Rescue Teams, Army MPs, and federal forensic investigators descended upon the discreet, glass-walled office building in the suburban tech corridor.
I rode in the forward command vehicle alongside General Marcus, wearing my tactical combat gear.
"Thermal imaging shows eighteen corporate security personnel inside, all heavily armed," the FBI tactical commander reported over the radio headset. "The main laboratory is located three stories underground, accessible only by a biometric elevator."
"No lethal force unless fired upon," General Marcus commanded into the mic. "Our priority is securing the evidence and locking down the synthesized biological material."
"Moving in," the tactical lead confirmed.
CRASH.
Breaching charges exploded against the reinforced glass doors of the Vanguard facility. Flashbang grenades detonated with deafening booms, lighting up the lobby in blinding flashes of white light.
Within eight minutes, the FBI tactical team had swept through the upper floors, securing twelve corporate executives and private security guards without a single shot fired.
I walked down the concrete stairwell into the subterranean facility alongside Major Chen and Dr. Rostova.
The air grew cold, smelling strongly of industrial bleach and liquid nitrogen.
When we breached the heavy steel doors of Level 3, we stepped into a vast, sterile laboratory. Glass-walled containment units lined the walls, filled with complex centrifuge equipment, blood storage vats, and advanced bio-synthesizers.
In the center of the room sat a large glass chamber—a small, windowed room containing a single bed, a small desk, a few faded drawing pads, and a child’s reading lamp.
It was where my daughter had lived for two years.
I stepped inside the glass chamber, my heart breaking into a thousand pieces as I touched the small drawing pad resting on the desk.
On the paper was a crude, childhood crayon drawing of an Army officer holding hands with a little girl under a bright yellow sun. Written across the top in Grace's handwriting were four words:
MOMMY IS COMING BACK.
She had drawn it every single day, keeping her faith alive in the pitch-black darkness of a corporate dungeon.
Dr. Rostova stepped up beside me, holding a encrypted flash drive she had pulled from the main server rack.
"We got it all, Colonel," Dr. Rostova said, her voice filled with deep professional pride. "Every operational log, every corporate email, every financial transaction, and the full master formula for 'Project Phoenix'. Vanguard is completely, irrevocably dead."

I took the crayon drawing, folding it carefully, and placed it inside my tactical vest, right over my heart.
"Burn the facility to the ground," I ordered quietly. "Seize every server, seal every door, and erase this place from the map."
