Chapter 4 - The Breach

The quiet neighborhood of Ridgeway Court was dark, the streetlights casting a dim, orange glow over the manicured lawns.
The convoy of black tactical vans moved without sirens, their headlights turned off, guided only by the faint light of the rainy sky. They pulled onto the grass of the neighboring properties, their doors opening in unison with a soft, metallic hiss.
Nathan stepped out into the cold rain.
He didn't look at his house. He looked at the shadows of the deputy marshals moving with absolute precision across the wet lawn, their boots silent on the grass.
At the front door, the lead deputy raised a heavy steel battering ram.
“Federal agents! Open the door!” Vance’s voice boomed through the quiet street.
Before the echoes of his voice had died away, the ram struck the oak front door. The wood splintered with a sound like a small explosion, the heavy lock tearing clean out of the frame.
“Go! Go! Go!”
Nathan followed the rear team through the kitchen entry. The glass of the back door shattered as Marcus Reed used a specialized tool to clear the lock. Nathan stepped over the threshold, his boots crunching on the glass, his senses instantly saturated by the sharp, chemical smell of industrial vinegar and soap that hung heavy in the air.
The living room was a scene of immediate, chaotic screaming.
Claire, Vanessa, Brooke, and Erin had been sitting on the sofa, drinking wine from a crystal decanter while Harold Vance sat at the dining table with a stack of legal documents.
When the deputies burst through the door, Vanessa screamed, throwing her wineglass against the wall, the dark red liquid splashing like blood across the white wallpaper. Erin tried to run toward the stairs, but she was immediately tackled to the carpet by two deputies, her hands forced behind her back.
“What is this?!” Harold Vance shrieked, standing up from the table, his face pale, his hands raised in the air. “I am a licensed attorney! This is an illegal entry! We have a restraining order against Nathan Cole!”
“The federal government has a restraining order against you, Mr. Vance,” Chief Marshal Vance said, stepping into the room and shoving a copy of the federal warrant into the attorney’s face. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit child abuse, obstruction of justice, and felony coercion.”
“Nathan!” Claire screamed, her eyes locking onto her husband as he stepped through the kitchen archway. She didn't look remorseful; she looked furious. “You brought your little army into my house? You think you can steal my daughter from me? I am her mother! I gave her life!”
Nathan didn't look at her. He didn't say a single word.
He walked past her as if she were a ghost, his eyes fixed on the basement door at the end of the hallway.
“Nathan, stop!” Brooke yelled, struggling against the grip of a deputy. “You’re a monster! You’re destroying this family!”
Nathan reached the basement door. It was a heavy, solid-core door, and across the frame, a thick brass padlock had been screwed directly into the wood.
He didn't wait for a key.
Nathan took a step back, raised his right leg, and drove the heel of his boot directly beside the brass latch. The pine doorframe exploded under the impact of his heavy combat boot, the lock tearing free in a shower of white drywall dust and splinters.
He threw the door open, revealing the dark, cold stairs leading down into the concrete basement.
“Lily!” Nathan called out, his voice cracking for the first time.
