Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

Sienna’s deposition was the tipping point. Faced with the undeniable specificity of her testimony and the corroborating physical evidence found along her escape route, the federal judge denied the motion to suppress the hard drives.

The arm of the law began to swing with terrifying speed.

Over the next two weeks, the federal indictment was expanded to include twenty-four additional individuals. The evening news was no longer a circus of speculation; it was a roll call of disgrace. Two prominent local judges resigned from the bench before the marshals could arrive at their chambers. A city councilman was arrested at the airport with a suitcase full of cash and a ticket to a non-extradition country.

The machine my father had built to protect himself was collapsing under the weight of its own rot.

One afternoon, a large courier envelope arrived at the safe house, delivered by a federal marshal. Inside was a certified legal document signed by the executor of my father's frozen estate.

"What is it?" Deandra asked, leaning over my shoulder as I read the text.

"It’s a settlement offer," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "The estate's remaining trustees are offering to transfer the full deed of the Oakwood property and three million dollars in unrestricted funds to a trust under Sienna's name if I agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the names in the ledger books."

"They're trying to buy your silence again," Deandra whispered.

I walked to the kitchen counter, picked up a pen, and drew a thick, black line through the entire document. I wrote one word across the front in large, block letters: NEVER.

I stuffed the papers back into the envelope and handed it to the marshal waiting at the door. "Take this back to the trustees. Tell them my daughter's truth isn't for sale. We’ll see them at the trial."
