Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

At 6:30 AM, the sun rose over Brentwood, casting long golden light across Arthur Sterling’s lawn.

I sat in the command van alongside Jax and Kovacs, eating a cold energy bar while monitoring the audio feed from Arthur’s master bedroom.

A sudden, sharp yell echoed through the speakers.

"What the hell is this?!" Arthur’s voice boomed, thick with sleep and sudden panic.

We watched the thermal camera inside the room. Arthur had jumped out of bed, holding the photograph in his trembling hand.

"Dean! Paul! Get up here now!" Arthur screamed into his house intercom.

Within ninety seconds, both of his sons burst into the master bedroom, wearing sweatpants, looking dazed.

"Dad, what’s going on?" Dean asked, rubbing his eyes.

Arthur threw the photograph onto the bed. "Who put this here?!"

Dean picked it up, glanced at it, and frowned. "Is that... is that Laura’s kid?"

"Yes, it’s the kid!" Arthur yelled, his voice rising to a frantic pitch. "Who put this photo on my nightstand while I was sleeping?!"

Paul looked around the room, his face turning pale. "Dad... the alarm system didn't go off. The doors were locked. How could anyone get into the master suite?"

"Call the security company!" Arthur raged. "Call Captain Miller down at the precinct! I want armed guards at my gate right now!"

On the monitor, I watched Arthur walk over to his nightstand to grab his phone. His hands were shaking so hard he almost dropped it.

"He’s spooked," Kovacs noted dryly from her terminal. "His blood pressure must be through the roof."

"Good," I said. "Now hit his bank accounts."

Jax tapped a series of keys on his main terminal.

"Executing Phase Two," Jax said. "Deploying freeze orders through the Treasury Department’s automated anti-money laundering protocol. Using the flagged cartel transfers we pulled off his hard drive last night."

Three minutes later, Arthur’s phone rang.

He answered it on speakerphone. "Sterling."

"Arthur, this is Marcus at First Tennessee Bank," a panicked voice came through the line. "We’ve got a major problem."

"What problem?" Arthur demanded. "I’m in the middle of an emergency!"

"The Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network just flagged all four of your commercial development accounts," the banker said. "Every account associated with Sterling Development, including the payroll account and your personal liquidity trust, has been frozen pending a federal audit."

Arthur froze. "What are you talking about?! You can't freeze my accounts! I have a twelve-million-dollar contractor payment due at noon today!"

"It’s not us, Arthur!" the banker pleaded. "It’s a federal injunction. The system flagged suspicious wire transfers originating from offshore accounts in Grand Cayman linked to money laundering. The funds are locked. I can't even issue a cashier’s check."

Arthur slammed his fist onto the nightstand, breaking the glass lamp sitting on top.

"Unfreeze them!" he screamed. "Use your override!"

"I can't!" the banker cried. "If I touch those accounts, I go to federal prison! You need to get your legal team on this right now!"

The line went dead.

Arthur stood in the center of his bedroom, breathing heavily, his chest heaving. Dean and Paul stared at their father in complete disbelief.

"Dad..." Dean stammered. "If the contractor payment doesn't clear at noon... the workers on the downtown tower walk off the site. The news will pick it up."

"Shut up!" Arthur roared. "Shut your mouth!"

He grabbed his desk phone to dial his attorney.

In the van, Jax smiled. "Redirecting call."

Arthur held the receiver to his ear. Instead of his corporate attorney, my voice echoed softly through the line.

"Good morning, Arthur," I said.

Arthur went dead silent. His eyes darted around the room as if he expected me to materialize out of the walls.

"Ethan?" he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and growing terror. "Is that... is that you?"

"I told you I was coming, Arthur," I said quietly. "You took my son’s voice. I’m taking your empire."

"You... you carpenter piece of trash!" Arthur screamed into the receiver. "You think you can do this to me?! I’ll have you put in a cage for the rest of your life! I’ll call the police chief right now!"

May you like

"Go ahead," I replied softly. "Call Chief Vance. Ask him why federal agents are currently pulling up to his house with an arrest warrant for judicial corruption."

Arthur dropped the receiver. It hung from the cord, spinning slowly in the air.
