Chapter 9 - A Legacy Reclaimed

Three weeks after the trial, the summer sun was shining bright over the gardens of Aspen Hill.
The soft cries of a newborn baby echoed gently through the nursery, which had been decorated in warm pastels, white oak furniture, and soft hand-woven blankets.
I sat in a comfortable rocking chair near the window, holding my newborn daughter in my arms. She had dark hair like mine, but bright, sparkling blue eyes that looked up at me with absolute trust and innocence.
"She’s perfect, Cassidy," Martha whispered, leaning over to place a soft kiss on the baby's forehead. "What are you going to name her?"
I looked down at the tiny miracle resting against my chest, feeling a deep, profound peace settle over my soul.
"Her name is Victoria," I said softly. "Victoria Vance."
Victoria—meaning victory.
A knock sounded at the nursery door. Arthur stepped in quietly, carrying a small leather pouch.
"Sorry to disturb you, Boss," Arthur said gently. "The final liquidations of the Morrison estate were completed today. All their personal debt has been settled through asset seizure."
He reached into the pouch and pulled out a single item, laying it on the small side table next to my rocking chair.
It was the golden signet ring that Brendan’s father had passed down to him—the symbol of the "Morrison pride" that Diane had bragged about for three long years.
"What should I do with it, Ma'am?" Arthur asked.
I picked up the heavy gold ring, looking at the ornate crest that had once made a family feel so superior that they thought they could humiliate an innocent woman.

"Melt it down," I said calmly. "Sell the gold, and donate the proceeds to the city's shelter for abused women and children."
Arthur smiled warmly. "Consider it done, Boss."
