CHAPTER 6 — THE MOMENT POWER CHANGES HANDS

The room outside had gone silent.

Even the gala music felt distant now.

Guests were gathering near the library entrance, pretending not to watch.

Inside, Bradley stood surrounded.

Security behind him.

Dante in front of him.

Chloe slightly behind Dante, heart racing.

Bradley tried to laugh again, but it came out thin.

“This is insane,” he said. “You’re threatening me over a conversation?”

Dante stepped closer.

“No,” he said. “I am correcting behavior.”

Bradley scoffed.

“You think you’re untouchable?”

Dante looked at him for a long moment.

Then said:

“No. I think you are.”

A pause.

Then he added quietly:

“And that is why you will apologize properly.”

Bradley’s voice rose.

“Or what?”

Silence.

Dante didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Chloe.

Not Bradley.

Chloe felt something shift in her chest.

And Dante said:

“Because she deserves to hear what a man sounds like when he stops pretending he is powerful.”

Bradley froze.

For the first time, the crowd behind him wasn’t laughing.

No one was laughing.

Jessica had already stepped away.

Even security looked uncertain.

Bradley turned back toward Chloe.

And something in him broke—not dramatically, but enough.

He swallowed.

“…Chloe,” he said, voice tight. “I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.”

Dante’s voice cut in.

“Louder.”

Bradley’s jaw clenched.

“I said I’m sorry.”

Dante didn’t move.

“That is not enough.”

Bradley’s hands shook slightly now.

“I’m sorry for humiliating you,” he said again, louder. “I was wrong.”

Silence.

Dante finally nodded once.

“Good.”

Then he stepped aside.

Not for Bradley.

For Chloe.

And for the first time that night, Chloe realized something terrifying and freeing at the same time:

May you like

She was not the one being watched anymore.

She was the one being protected.
