Chapter 4 - The Venom of the Ousted

The following week was a blur of corporate restructurings and public relations management. Claire moved into a large, beautiful office on the executive floor, but she refused to let the corporate wealth change her routine. Every afternoon at 3:30 PM sharp, she left the office to pick up Lily from her kindergarten class, bringing her back to the building where Lily had her own small play corner in the executive lounge.

However, the peace was shattered on Thursday afternoon. Claire’s phone rang—it was the school principal.

"Ms. Bennett, we have a bit of a situation," the principal said, her voice tight with concern. "Your brother, Mark Sterling, arrived at the school about twenty minutes ago. He claimed there was a family emergency and attempted to check Lily out of class. We refused because he is not listed on the authorized pickup form, but he became highly aggressive with the staff. The police are currently here."

Claire’s heart slammed against her ribs. A wave of cold, protective maternal fury washed over her. "I’m coming right now."

Within ten minutes, Claire arrived at the school, accompanied by two of the security guards Nicholas Vance had assigned to her. In the main office, Mark was being held by two police officers, his clothes disheveled, his eyes wild with a mixture of alcohol and desperation.

"She’s my niece!" Mark was shouting at the principal. "Claire stole my life! She stole my house! I just wanted to talk to the kid! I have a right to see my family!"

Lily was sitting in the inner office, the door locked, holding a coloring book tightly against her chest. When she saw Claire through the glass, she ran out, throwing her arms around her mother’s waist.

"Mommy! Uncle Mark was yelling," Lily whispered, her voice shaking. "He looked scary."

Claire scooped Lily up, holding her tightly against her chest, her eyes locked onto her brother. She walked directly up to him, ignoring the police officers who tried to step between them.

"If you ever come within a mile of my daughter again, Mark," Claire said, her voice so low and sharp it cut through his drunken delusion like ice, "I won't just ruin your finances. I will personally ensure that the financial fraud documents I found in the Sterling archives—the ones detailing your offshore accounts—are delivered to the federal prosecutor's office. You won't be facing bankruptcy, Mark. You will be facing a ten-year prison sentence. Do you understand me?"

Mark stared at his sister, the alcohol-induced bravado completely draining from his face. For the first time, he realized that the quiet, submissive sister he had bullied his entire life was completely gone. In her place was a mother who would burn the world to protect her child.

"Get him out of my sight," Claire told the officers.

As Mark was led away in handcuffs, Nicholas Vance walked through the school doors, having rushed over the moment he heard the news. He looked at Claire and Lily, his dark eyes filled with a deep, fierce concern that had nothing to do with corporate contracts.

"Are you both okay?" Nicholas asked, his hand coming to rest gently on Claire’s shoulder, his warmth instantly grounding her.

Claire took a deep breath, hugging Lily tightly. "We're okay, Nicholas. But the war isn't just in the boardroom anymore. They're getting desperate."

"Then we end this once and for all," Nicholas said, his eyes darkening with a dangerous resolve. "Arthur is throwing a private charity gala at the country club this weekend to rally his political allies. We're going to attend, Claire. And we're going to cut the grass from under his feet completely."
