Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Diane

While Ryan sat in federal lockup and Grant awaited his sentencing hearing in county custody, Diane Vance found herself entirely alone.
Without her husband’s embezzled wealth, without her son’s stolen subsidies, and with her daughter Brooke fleeing to Miami to live with a wealthy college boyfriend who had no idea her family was currently the centerpiece of a federal fraud scandal, Diane was forced to confront the harsh reality of ordinary life.
She had no savings of her own. Every asset she had ever owned—from her designer wardrobe to her country club membership—had been tied directly to Grant’s fraudulent corporate cash flow.
In mid-March, my attorney Marcus called me with an update that felt almost cinematic in its poetic justice.
“You’ll never guess where Diane is living,” Marcus laughed over the phone.
“Enlighten me,” I said, reviewing a security deployment report for our new cloud servers.
“A studio apartment above a laundromat in North Denver. She tried to apply for state housing assistance, but because her name was tied to multiple fraudulent corporate bank accounts during the federal asset seizure, her application was red-flagged for financial fraud.”
I paused my reading, looking out the penthouse window toward the distant sprawl of the city. “Is she working?”
“She tried to get a job as a receptionist at a local dentist's office,” Marcus chuckled. “Apparently, she demanded a starting salary of eighty thousand dollars and told the office manager that cleaning up after patients was ‘beneath her social standing.’ She was fired within twenty minutes.”
I couldn't help a small, cold smile. Some people never learn, no matter how hard life hits them. They spend their entire lives wrapped in the delusion of their own superiority, only to discover that the world doesn't owe them a damn thing.
“Leave her be, Marcus,” I said. “She’s completely irrelevant now. Let her reap what she sowed.”

“Agreed. Focus on the baby. You’re due in six weeks, and the nursery looks like something out of a luxury interior design magazine.”
“It is,” I smiled. “And nobody is ever going to burn, steal, or take any part of it away from us again.”
