Chapter 3 - The Morning of the Reckoning

At 8:00 AM the next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a bright, harsh light over the Pine Valley neighborhood.

In the master bedroom of the estate, Patrick Callahan was sipping his morning espresso, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. He had finally rid his family of the "common girl" and her excessive brood of children. He was already planning how to redecorate Andrew’s wing of the house into a private fitness studio and a cigar lounge.

The peace was shattered by the deafening, synchronized roar of heavy machinery.

Patrick spilled his espresso down his silk robe as the walls of the mansion literally vibrated. He ran to the window, throwing open the curtains, and his jaw dropped.

Three massive commercial moving trucks, two police cruisers from the state precinct, and a black Mercedes sedan were parked across his pristine front lawn, tearing deep ruts into the expensive turf. A team of four locksmiths in bright yellow vests were already at the front gate, using heavy industrial grinders to cut through the chains and locks Patrick had installed the night before.

"Margaret! Call the police!" Patrick screamed, his face turning an ungodly shade of purple as he ran down the grand staircase. "The thugs are back! That crazy woman brought a mob!"

Margaret rushed down behind him, her hair half-done, screaming at the top of her lungs. They threw open the front doors just as the heavy iron gate collapsed inward with a loud, metallic crash.

I stepped out of the back of the black Mercedes. I was no longer wearing the soaked, muddy clothes from the night before. I wore a tailored emerald-green dress, my hair done in elegant waves, and my eyes completely shielded by dark designer sunglasses. Behind me walked Rebecca Stone, flanked by two armed state sheriffs and a private security detail of six men.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Patrick roared, standing on the porch, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and sudden, unadulterated panic. "Officer! Arrest these people! They are trespassing on private property! They destroyed my gate!"

The lead Sheriff, a stone-faced man named Captain Vance, walked up the steps, pulling a thick packet of laminated documents from his belt.

"Mr. Patrick Callahan?" Captain Vance asked.

"Yes! And I want this garbage cleared off my lawn immediately!"

"Mr. Callahan, I am here to execute an emergency order of immediate ejectment and a temporary restraining order," Captain Vance said calmly, handing the papers directly to Patrick. "You, your wife, and anyone else currently residing in this residence have exactly one hour to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises."

Margaret let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "Are you insane?! We own this house! This is the Callahan estate! My husband's name is on the gate!"

"Actually, ma'am, your husband's name isn't on anything," Rebecca Stone stepped forward, her voice cutting through the morning air like a guillotine. "This property is registered under Vance Holdings LLC, which is solely owned by Cynthia Callahan. The true deed was transferred to her weeks ago. You have been living here under a tenancy-at-will agreement with her late husband, which terminated the moment you violently evicted the rightful owner and her minor children last night."

Patrick’s face went completely pale. His hands began to shake so violently that the legal documents fell from his grip, scattering across the wet stone steps. He looked past Rebecca, straight at me.

"Cynthia... this is a mistake," he stammered, his arrogant voice suddenly shrinking into a pathetic whine. "We are family. We can talk about this. Andrew wouldn't want this."

May you like

I walked up the steps, stopping just inches away from him. I pulled off my sunglasses, letting him look directly into the eyes of the woman he had tried to destroy in the rain.

"Andrew planned this, Patrick," I said softly, my voice dripping with icy satisfaction. "You struck my son. You threw my sick baby into a storm. Your hour starts right now. If you are not gone by 9:00 AM, my security team will toss your expensive clothes into the mud, just like your wife did to my children."
