Chapter 9 - THE HARBOR AT PEACE

One year after the wedding night, the Nightfall sat quietly at its terminal in the main marina. The white luxury yacht Ocean’s Pearl was gone, sold to a commercial cruise line in another state to cover the Vales' outstanding debts; the harbor was clean, calm, and peaceful under a massive canopy of summer stars.

A private dinner had been set up on the aft deck of the megayacht. A small round table was covered in white linen, illuminated by the soft, warm glow of three glass candles.

Mia was already asleep in the main salon, curled up on the cream leather sofa with a picture book, her small stuffed bear tucked under her arm.

Adrian and I sat at the table, clinking two glasses of mineral water together.

"Happy anniversary of the phone call," Adrian said, a soft, rare smile appearing on his face as he looked across the candles at me.

"The call that changed everything," I smiled, taking a sip. "You know, Vance told me last week that my father’s appeal was officially denied by the state supreme court. He’s serving his full term."

"He earned every day of it," Adrian said, his gaze dropping to the dark water lapping gently against the hull. "But we don't need to talk about him tonight. His name isn't on the guest list anymore."

He stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and held out his hand to me. I took it, letting him pull me up to my feet and lead me to the brass railing where, twelve months earlier, I had stood soaked and shivering in a ruined dress.

The water below was clear now, reflecting the bright silver lights of the Nightfall and the distant stars above.

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a simple, stunning platinum band set with a single, flawless raw emerald—the exact color of the ocean when the sun hits it through the clouds.

"Five years ago, you asked me for time, Maya," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that deep, steady register that had always been my anchor. "You wanted to make sure you could stand on your own two feet before you joined your life to mine. You’ve done that. You’ve changed this city. You’ve saved your sister, you’ve protected our daughter, and you’ve shown everyone exactly who you are."

He slid the ring onto my finger, the metal cool and perfect against my skin.

"Now, I’m asking you to let me stand beside you," he said, his gray eyes searching mine with a profound, unblinking devotion. "Not as a protector. Not as a billionaire. Just as the man who loves you, and the father who will spend the rest of his life ensuring you never have to make that call alone again."

May you like

Tears filled my eyes, but they weren't the tears of shame or rage that had blinded me in the harbor. They were tears of an absolute, unburdened joy.

"Yes, Adrian," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him down into a deep, warm kiss that tasted of the sweet summer air and the promise of a lifetime of quiet nights. "Yes. A thousand times, yes."
