Chapter 7 - The Storm Breaks

The deafening roar of tactical stun grenades exploded through the living room as bright flash-bangs detonated against the concrete pillars.

Windows shattered inward, spraying safety glass across the polished floor as the howling coastal tempest swept into the room, bringing freezing rain and ninety-mile-an-hour wind tearing through the curtains.

"Down!" Moretti shouted, grabbing Clara by the shoulder and pulling her flat against the floor behind a heavy marble pillar as gunfire erupted across the upper gallery.

Victor Vance’s security team had been waiting in ambush on the second-floor mezzanine, but Moretti hadn't come to negotiate—he had brought his full tactical force. Outside, a dozen Moretti operatives who had scaled the cliff face smashed through the patio doors, weapons drawn, returning fire with disciplined, lethal precision.

Grant screamed like a terrified child, scrambling on his hands and knees across the slippery floor, trying to reach the front entrance.

"Grant, stay down!" Clara yelled over the deafening roar of glass breaking and automatic gunfire.

Grant ignored her. Driven by pure, blind panic, he bolted toward the open hallway.

A heavy burst of suppression fire shattered the concrete doorframe above him. Plaster debris and sharp metal fragments rained down, striking Grant in the shoulder and leg. He tumbled down the entrance steps with a agonized cry, crashing hard against the rain-slick gravel of the driveway, his leg bent at an awkward, sickening angle.

In the center of the room, Victor Vance was scrambling toward a side door where his personal bodyguard was laying down heavy cover fire.

Moretti stepped out from behind the marble pillar, calm and completely unfazed by the chaos around him. He raised his silver-headed cane, unscrewing the heavy brass handle with a swift, practiced twist to reveal a gleaming, fourteen-inch steel sword blade hidden within the dark wood.

With a swift, fluid motion, Moretti stepped past a fallen security guard, driving the pommel of his cane hard into the chest of Vance’s bodyguard, sending the man crashing through a glass partition.

Before Victor could reach the door handle, Moretti’s heavy hand gripped the back of Vance’s tailored coat, throwing the billionaire roughly against the remaining glass wall overlooking the raging ocean below.

"It's over, Victor," Moretti growled, pressing the sharp tip of his concealed blade lightly against Vance’s collarbone. "Your shooters on the roof have already surrendered. Federal agents and state police tactical units are entering the front gates right now."

Victor pressed his back hard against the glass, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his slick composure entirely destroyed. "You brought federal agents into this, Moretti? You're a syndicate boss! You'll destroy yourself!"

"I am a protector of this city," Moretti replied coldly. "And unlike you, I pay my debts. Julian filed the full financial corruption dossier with the Department of Justice thirty minutes ago. Every offshore account, every bribe paid to the city council, every illegal shipment linked to Apex Waterfront Partners is now in federal hands."

The distant wail of police sirens echoed up the winding cliff road, their red and blue strobe lights flashing through the rain and fog below.

Victor looked out the window at the approaching fleet of law enforcement vehicles, his face turning gray. He had built an empire on secrecy, bribery, and corporate immunity, but faced with federal racketeering charges and undeniable physical evidence, his empire was crumbling into dust in a single night.

Clara stepped out from behind the marble pillar, her face wet with rain blowing through the shattered windows, her eyes calm and unyielding.

She walked over to where Victor Vance stood pinned against the glass.

"You told me earlier that Grant was crude and incompetent," Clara said, her voice cutting through the howl of the storm. "You were wrong. You're just like him. You thought power meant you could crush people who couldn't fight back. But my grandmother taught me that true power belongs to those who stand their ground."

She turned away, leaving Victor standing in the rain, surrounded by Moretti’s men and the approaching glow of federal police lights.

Outside on the driveway, Grant was lying in the mud, weeping hysterical tears as state troopers pinned him to the ground and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. He looked up through the freezing rain, seeing Clara walk down the entrance steps beside Dominic Moretti.

"Clara!" Grant sobbed, his voice pitiful and broken. "Clara, please! Tell them I was forced into this! Tell them Vance threatened me! I loved you, Clara! Please help me!"

Clara stopped at the edge of the gravel drive. She looked down at the man she had once promised to marry—the man who had smiled at her table, lied to her face, broken her puppy's leg, and tried to burn her family legacy to the ground.

"You never loved me, Grant," Clara said softly, without a trace of anger left in her voice—only profound, absolute pity. "You loved money. And now you have nothing."

She turned her back on him and walked toward Moretti’s car, never looking back.
