Chapter 5 - The Archives on Broad Street

The building on Broad Street was an old brick townhouse that had survived the Civil War, three hurricanes, and forty years of Charleston legal battles.

Inside the basement, behind a reinforced steel door, sat the physical memory of the Lowcountry—thousands of legal files, private investigation records, deposition transcripts, and surveillance photographs that never made it into public court databases.

Frank Miller, a retired deputy sheriff with white hair and a severe limp, handed me a heavy brass key and a cup of lukewarm tea.

"You haven't been down here since you retired, Gerald," Frank said, leaning against the metal shelving units. "I thought you gave up digging in the dirt."

"I did," I said, flipping through the index cards in a metal filing drawer. "Until the dirt moved into my son's house."

I stopped at a drawer labeled 2016 - STERLING DEVELOPMENT / TRUST AUDITS.

Six years ago, before Natalie married Daniel, she had been married to a junior partner at her father’s firm named Julian Vance. The marriage had lasted eighteen months before Julian suddenly resigned from the firm, relinquished his partnership shares, moved to Seattle, and signed a sweeping non-disclosure agreement that erased his name from every public document in South Carolina.

At the time, I was hired by a minority shareholder in the development firm to find out why Julian had abandoned ten million dollars in equity overnight.

I pulled the thick, faded Manila folder from the back of the drawer.

Inside were forty pages of handwritten notes, bank transfer receipts, and three recorded interviews on micro-cassettes.

I set the folder on a wooden table beneath a single hanging bulb and opened it.

Julian Vance’s sworn statement sat on the top.

“She has these episodes,” Julian had stated during a private deposition recorded in a hotel room in Savannah. “When she feels she is losing control of a situation or when someone doesn't respond to her authority, she becomes violently physical. She threw a heavy bronze statue at my head because I questioned her credit card expenses. When I threatened to file for divorce, her father, Thomas, came to my office with two partners. They showed me fabricated evidence of embezzlement they claimed they would submit to the State Bar if I didn't sign the settlement and leave the state.”

I read the lines twice.

When she feels she is losing control... she becomes violently physical.

I flipped to the next page.

There was a medical report attached from a private clinic in Hilton Head dated August 12, 2015. Julian Vance had suffered a severe concussion, two fractured ribs, and a laceration on his shoulder requiring fourteen stitches.

The attending physician on that report was a man named Dr. Robert Lin.

I pulled out my phone and took high-resolution photographs of every single page.

"Did you find what you were looking for?" Frank asked from the doorway.

"I found the pattern," I said, closing the folder. "Natalie Sterling isn't a loving stepmother who had a bad night. She’s a serial abuser whose father has spent ten years using blackmail, non-disclosure agreements, and bought doctors to clean up her wake."

"Gerald," Frank warned gently, stepping closer. "Julian Vance signed a non-disclosure agreement with a five-million-dollar penalty clause. Thomas Sterling will ruin him if he opens his mouth."

"Julian Vance lives three thousand miles away in Seattle," I said, putting my leather jacket back on. "He's safe. But Lily is sitting in a state intake room two miles from here. And I'm not letting Thomas Sterling buy her silence the way he bought his son-in-law's."

My phone chimed in my pocket.

It was a text from Detective Marcus Vance:

Family Court hearing scheduled for 11:30 AM before Judge Arthur Ellison. Sterling filed an emergency petition for temporary physical custody to be granted to Daniel. They're moving fast, Gerald. You have two hours.

I looked at Frank.

"I need a favor," I said.

"Name it."

"Call the airport. Find out if Thomas Sterling's private jet is on the tarmac at Charleston International. Because if I know Thomas, he’s already planning to move Lily to his private estate in North Carolina the moment the judge signs that order."
