Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Two months passed in the quiet solace of Flagstaff.
Noah was thriving. His cheeks had filled out into chubby, rosy cushions, his eyes turned a brilliant, sparkling blue, and his laughter filled the wooden halls of the cabin every morning. Ryan had taken an extended paternity leave, using his savings and consulting fees to stay by our side every single day.
While our world was filling with light, the world we had left behind in Phoenix was burning to the ground.
Arthur Vance flew up to Flagstaff on a Tuesday morning, carrying a thick red file folder. We sat on the porch drinking fresh coffee while Noah played on a blanket at our feet.
"The depositions were completed yesterday," Arthur declared, taking a sip of coffee. "And what we uncovered goes far deeper than we initially thought."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Linda wasn't acting alone," Arthur revealed, pulling out a set of financial spreadsheets. "Your mother had developed a severe, hidden gambling addiction over the last four years. She owed nearly eight hundred thousand dollars to high-interest private lenders in Las Vegas."
I gasped. "Eight hundred thousand?"
"Your father knew about it," Arthur continued. "Eighteen months ago, when he realized her debts were going to go public and destroy their social standing, they devised a plan. They knew Walter had set up a massive trust for your future children. When you got pregnant, Linda intentionally began setting the stage to convince everyone—including Ryan—that you were emotionally unstable."
Ryan’s fists clenched against his knees. "She was planning this before Noah was even born?"
"Precisely," Arthur said grimly. "The goal was to have Avery declared legally incompetent immediately after birth, assign Linda as the permanent trustee of the estate, and liquidate the trust over five years to pay off the Vegas debts and fund Chloe’s lavish lifestyle. The Range Rover was just the beginning. They were planning to sell your marital home next."
"And Chloe?" I asked softly. "Did she know?"
"Chloe didn't care where the money came from," Arthur replied dryly. "As long as her cards cleared at the boutiques, she asked no questions. In her deposition yesterday, when asked why she took your custom baby seat out of the Range Rover, she literally testified: 'It took up too much room, and I needed the back seat for my luggage.'"
I shook my head, feeling a mixture of profound disgust and sadness. "Where are they now?"
"Linda is being held without bail after failing a drug screen while on house arrest," Arthur reported. "Her trial date is set for November. Richard’s real estate firm went bankrupt last week; his assets have been seized by the court. He’s currently living in a rented studio apartment in Glendale, working as a junior clerk."
"And Chloe?"
"She tried to launch an social media campaign claiming she was a 'victim of family tyranny,'" Arthur smiled faintly. "It backfired disastrously. Her followers discovered the court records, and she was dropped by every sponsor. Last I heard, she was working double shifts at a diner in Tempe to pay her rent."
I looked down at Noah, who was kicking his little legs in the air, grabbing at a soft wooden ring.

"They built a house out of lies," I said quietly. "And they fell into their own cellar."
"Justice has a long memory, Avery," Arthur said, closing his folder. "And your grandfather has an even longer one."
