CHAPTER 5 — The Day the Hotel Stopped Obeying Them

By noon, the Bennett Grand Hotel was chaos.
But not visible chaos.
Controlled chaos.
The kind that happens behind glass walls.
Ethan called me seventeen times.
I didn’t answer.
Patricia sent messages.
Threats.
Warnings.
Then confusion.
Because something had changed.
Their access had been revoked.
Not just management systems.
Everything.
Security protocols no longer recognized them as authorized personnel.
Financial dashboards locked them out.
Even internal communications rerouted.
At 2:14 p.m., Ethan showed up at my apartment.
He was not calm anymore.
“Fix this,” he demanded immediately.
I looked at him.
“You mean fix what you broke?” I asked.
Patricia stepped forward.
“This is childish,” she snapped. “You’re humiliating your husband.”
I tilted my head slightly.
“No,” I said quietly.
“You did that without my help.”
Ethan’s voice rose.
“Do you think this is some game? That hotel employs hundreds of people—”
“It still does,” I interrupted.
“It just doesn’t report to you anymore.”
Silence.
Patricia narrowed her eyes.
“You don’t have the authority for this.”
I smiled slightly.
“I didn’t.”
A pause.
“But she did.”
Ethan froze.
“…your grandmother?”
I nodded.
“She anticipated you,” I said.
Then added softly:
“Both of you.”
For the first time, I saw something flicker across Ethan’s face.
May you like
Not anger.
Fear.
