Chapter 7 - The Shadows in the Courtyard

Three months after the arrests of Karla and Roberto Morales, the sunroom of Teresa’s red-brick home in Coyoacán had been completely transformed. The heavy wooden bookcases were lined with legal texts and investigative files, while sunlight filtered through the stained-glass window, illuminating a brass plaque near the doorway: The Sofia Valdés Foundation for Child and Elder Protection.

Alejandro sat at his desk reviewing corporate filings for three new families who had reached out for help, while Mateo—now fourteen—was diligently organizing digital case files under his grandmother’s watchful eye.

It was 7:30 p.m. on a quiet Thursday when the peaceful rhythm of their evening was shattered.

A quiet tap sounded at the heavy iron gate facing the street. Teresa, carrying a tray of chamomile tea, glanced out the window. Outside stood a woman wrapped in a faded beige trench coat, looking frantically over her shoulder toward the tree-lined avenue.

Teresa walked to the gate and unlocked the latch. "May I help you?"

The woman stepped inside instantly, her breathing ragged. She pulled back her scarf, revealing a face covered in deep, yellowish bruises around her jaw and cheekbones.

"Commander Valdés?" the woman rasped, her voice barely a whisper. "My name is Elena. I... I worked as a paralegal for Roberto Morales’s legal team in Querétaro until two weeks ago. I know Karla’s trial is set to begin next month."

Teresa’s eyes narrowed into sharp focus. She immediately guided Elena inside the warm house, locking the iron gate behind them.

Alejandro brought a glass of water while Mateo pulled up a clean digital file on his laptop.

"Breathe, Elena," Teresa said gently, placing a hand on the woman’s trembling arm. "You're safe here. What do you know?"

"Roberto and Karla aren't working alone," Elena sobbed, wiping a tear from her bruised cheek. "Everyone thinks the network was dismantled when the federal agents raided the Querétaro office. But Roberto had an offshore contingency plan managed by a man named Arturo Vega—a former prosecutor who now runs a high-end private security firm."

Alejandro gasped softly. "Arturo Vega? He was the lead prosecutor on my late wife's estate probate three years ago!"

"Vega has been bribing two of the key witnesses in Karla’s upcoming criminal trial," Elena revealed, pulling a folded paper from her inner coat pocket. "They plan to recant their statements next week, claiming that you, Commander Valdés, used your former police status to fabricate the audio evidence and force a false confession out of Karla."

Mateo stood up from his chair, his hands clenching into fists. "They're trying to make my audio recording look fake?!"

"Not just fake, mijo," Teresa said softly, her mind rapidly assembling the pieces of the puzzle. "They want to discredit the Foundation before we even take our first case to court. If they prove I tampered with evidence, Karla walks free, and every victim account we restored gets tied up in judicial review again."

Elena gripped Teresa’s hand tightly. "Vega found out I copied his private ledger three days ago. That’s when his men beat me in the parking garage. I ran to Mexico City because... because I knew you were the only person strong enough to stop them."

Teresa looked at the paper Elena had handed her. It contained a list of offshore bank routing codes, encrypted server IP addresses, and a location in the industrial zone of Naucalpan—a private warehouse registered under Vega’s security firm.

"Alejandro," Teresa said, standing up with absolute authority. "Call Inspector Laura Gómez at the Financial Crimes Unit. Tell her we have the head of the serpent."

"What are you going to do, Mom?" Alejandro asked, panic creeping into his voice.

Teresa walked to her bedroom closet, opened a small combination safe, and pulled out a sleek silver recorder and her vintage police badge.

"Vega thinks he’s playing with an old woman who relies on the past," Teresa said, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips. "It’s time to show him how Commander Valdés operates in the present."
