Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Gates

The next morning, the lobby of VGL Headquarters was bustling with security officers, executives, and journalists.

At 10:00 AM, a black town car pulled up to the curb. Andrew Vance stepped out. He looked ten years older than his thirty-four years. His hair was thinning, dark circles shadowed his pale blue eyes, and his tailored suit looked slightly ill-fitting—the physical toll of six years of living as a puppet under his mother’s thumb.

He marched past the security gates, trying to maintain an air of aristocratic importance.

"I need to see Victoria Vance immediately," he demanded at the front desk. "Tell her Andrew Vance is here."

The receptionist, trained by my personal security team, didn't panic. She calmly pressed a button under her desk. "Mr. Vance, do you have an appointment?"

"I am her husband!" he shouted, his voice cracking, drawing looks from passing executives. "I mean... ex-husband! I have a right to see her!"

Two large, uniformed security guards stepped behind him. "Sir, you need to lower your voice or step outside."

"Let him up," my voice came through the desk intercom.

Five minutes later, Andrew stepped into my corner office on the fortieth floor. The double mahogany doors clicked shut behind him.

I didn't stand up. I sat behind my massive glass desk, reviewing a series of acquisition documents.

Andrew stood in the middle of the plush carpet, staring at me. He looked around the room—at the modern art, the city views, the framed photographs on my shelf showing two beautiful, healthy six-year-old boys playing on a sunlit beach in Hawaii.

"Victoria..." he breathed, taking a step forward. "My God... look at what you've done."

"State your business, Mr. Vance," I said without looking up from my tablet. "You have three minutes before my next board meeting."

"Mr. Vance?" he repeated, hurt flashing across his face. "Victoria, please. I watched the news last night. I... I couldn't believe it was you. You look incredible."

"Two minutes and forty seconds."

Andrew flushed with embarrassment, his hands trembling. "Victoria, my mother’s company... Vance Enterprises... Apex Capital served us with an immediate foreclosure notice this morning. They are seizing the main tower and liquidating our assets within thirty days. I know you're behind Apex. Please... you can't do this to us."

I set my tablet down, folded my hands on the desk, and looked him straight in the eyes.

"Why can't I?" I asked softly.

"Because... because we have a history!" Andrew pleaded, stepping closer to the desk. "Because I made a mistake! I was young, I was under my mother's thumb, I was terrified! You don't know what she was like, Victoria! She threatened to strip me of everything!"

"And you let her," I said, my voice drop-forged steel. "You chose a building, a title, and a bank account over a wife who loved you and two premature infants fighting for life in an ICU. You sent me a text message while my body was stitched together and my babies were on oxygen. Do you remember what you wrote, Andrew?"

Andrew lowered his eyes, shame burning his neck. "Victoria, I was cowardly—"

"You wrote: 'I can't do this. My mother made me choose.'" I stood up slowly, leaning across the desk. "Well, Andrew. You made your choice. And now, the bill has come due."
