Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed.
The physical recovery from my C-section was slow and agonizing, but every moment I spent sitting beside my daughter’s incubator made the pain bearable. We named her Maya—meaning hope and resilience.
On a bright Tuesday morning, Dr. Vance brought incredible news: Maya was officially stable enough to breathe completely on her own, her weight had reached five pounds, and she was cleared to leave the NICU for a standard hospital room. Holding her skin-to-skin against my chest for the very first time without wires or tubes was a feeling so profound it wiped away every scar left by Marcus’s cruelty.
While I focused on Maya’s recovery, the hurricane outside the hospital walls raged with terrifying momentum.
With Marcus held in maximum security without bail, his real estate company collapsed like a house of cards. News of the federal indictment hit the front pages of The Wall Street Journal and local news networks. Investors backed out, creditors froze assets, and sub-contractors stormed his corporate headquarters demanding unpaid wages.
Vanessa Holt—Marcus’s mistress—had her world completely dismantled. Her husband, Richard Holt, initiated divorce proceedings, revoked her access to all marital accounts, and filed a civil lawsuit against Marcus's firm for fraud.
However, cornered animals are always the most dangerous.
I was sitting in my private hospital room, gently rocking Maya in my arms, when Sarah entered, her expression unusually somber. She closed the door behind her and pulled the blinds down.
"What's wrong?" I asked immediately, sensing the shift in the air.
"Diane Reyes posted bond on her misdemeanor assault charge yesterday," Sarah said, dropping her purse onto the couch. "Her wealthy socialite friends pooled together $500,000 to get her out."
I tightened my grip slightly around Maya. "She’s free?"
"For now," Sarah said. "But that’s not all. My contact in the police department alerted me that Diane met with a high-profile family law attorney this morning. Elena... she’s filing an emergency petition for temporary custody of Maya."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. "On what grounds?! She assisted in assaulting me! She stood there while her son kicked me!"
"She’s playing dirty," Sarah explained grimly. "Her petition claims that you suffer from severe psychiatric disorders, that you installed illegal surveillance to fabricate evidence, and that you are living in an unstable financial situation now that Marcus’s assets are frozen. She’s claiming that as the wealthy grandmother, she can provide a safer, more stable environment for the baby while you undergo court-ordered psychological evaluation."
I let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. "She thinks she can take my daughter? After everything she did?"
"She knows she’s going to prison eventually on the criminal charges," Sarah said. "This is a desperate, calculated move to gain leverage. If she gets temporary custody of Maya, she can use the baby as a bargaining chip to force you to drop the civil suits, modify your testimony in Marcus’s criminal trial, and sign over the recorded evidence."
I looked down at Maya, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest, her tiny mouth making soft nursing motions in her sleep. A dark, terrifying resolve settled deep within my soul.
"She wants to play dirty?" I whispered, my voice dripping with an icy venom that made even Sarah pause. "She thinks I’m just a victim defending myself."
I looked up at Sarah. "Call my old contact at the Treasury Department. It’s time to talk about Diane’s past."
Sarah frowned, confused. "Diane’s past? What do you mean?"
"Marcus learned his cruelty and fraud from someone, Sarah," I revealed, a cold, lethal smile spreading across my face. "Thirty years ago, before Diane married into the Reyes family fortune, her first husband died under very suspicious circumstances in Florida. He had a $5 million life insurance policy that went entirely to her. And three years ago, when Marcus’s father passed away from 'sudden heart failure,' Diane quietly transferred $8 million from his estate into an undisclosed trust in Switzerland before his will was even probated."
Sarah gasped, her eyes widening in absolute shock. "Elena... do you have proof of this?"
"I was the one who prepared the estate tax returns for the family three years ago, Sarah," I said smoothly. "Marcus thought I was just doing basic arithmetic. He didn't realize I kept full digital copies of every off-the-books bank ledger, every wire transfer receipt, and every signed authorization form Diane thought she had burned."

I leaned forward, my eyes fixed on Sarah with absolute, unwavering focus.
"Diane Reyes wants to fight for my baby?" I said. "Let’s see how eager she is to fight for custody when the FBI reopens the investigation into her late husband’s death."
