CHAPTER 2: THE SECRETS ASHLEY REVEALED

The ocean no longer looked beautiful.

It looked distant.

Cold.

Unreal.

I sat alone on the balcony of my Cancun hotel room staring at my phone while waves rolled onto the beach below.

Ashley’s final message glowed on the screen.

There are others.

Three words.

Three words capable of destroying nine years of marriage more thoroughly than any affair.

For several minutes I simply stared.

Then another message arrived.

Can we meet?

I hesitated.

Everything in me wanted to throw the phone into the ocean.

Instead I typed a single response.

Where?

An hour later, I found Ashley sitting alone in a quiet café overlooking the marina.

She looked different from the woman who had boarded the aircraft.

Less glamorous.

Less confident.

More tired.

Humiliated people often looked older overnight.

When she saw me approaching, she stood.

Awkwardly.

"I didn't know if you'd come."

"I almost didn't."

She nodded.

"Fair."

Neither of us sat immediately.

The situation was absurd.

Two women connected by the same liar.

Two strangers sharing the same betrayal.

Eventually I took the seat opposite her.

Ashley slid her phone across the table.

"I think you should see this."

The screen displayed photographs.

Dozens of them.

Ryan with Ashley.

Ryan at restaurants.

Ryan in hotels.

Ryan on trips he had claimed were business meetings.

The evidence hurt.

But it wasn't surprising anymore.

Then Ashley opened a different folder.

And everything changed.

Different women.

Different dates.

Different cities.

My stomach tightened.

"Who are they?"

Ashley swallowed.

"I don't know all of them."

I looked closer.

There were at least four.

Maybe five.

The earliest photograph appeared to be nearly three years old.

Three years.

Three years of lies.

Three years of deception.

Three years while I sat at home believing my husband was working late.

My hands trembled slightly.

Ashley noticed.

"I'm sorry."

I laughed once.

The sound wasn't pleasant.

"At this point, I don't even know what you're apologizing for."

Neither did she.

For the next hour, Ashley told me everything.

The charity gala where they met.

The flirtation.

The first dinner.

The first lie.

Ryan had presented himself as a man trapped in a loveless marriage.

According to him, I was cold.

Distant.

Uninterested.

The villain in his story.

I listened quietly.

Not because I believed him.

Because every cheating man seemed to recycle the same script.

Ashley stared into her coffee.

"I actually felt sorry for him."

The irony wasn't lost on either of us.

"Did he ever mention children?"

Ashley shook her head.

"No."

"Debt?"

"No."

"Financial problems?"

Again she shook her head.

Then she hesitated.

That caught my attention immediately.

"What?"

Ashley looked uncomfortable.

"Actually..."

My pulse quickened.

"What?"

"He complained about money."

I frowned.

That made no sense.

Ryan owned a successful construction company.

He earned more than enough.

"What kind of complaints?"

Ashley opened another folder.

Bank transfers.

Screenshots.

Invoices.

Luxury purchases.

Jewelry.

Trips.

Hotel suites.

Private events.

The numbers were staggering.

I felt a chill.

Because suddenly a different picture emerged.

Ryan wasn't simply cheating.

He was spending recklessly.

Dangerously.

The amount of money disappearing from our accounts was far larger than I'd realized.

Much larger.

"How much?" I whispered.

Ashley looked at me carefully.

"You really don't know?"

My silence answered for me.

She took a deep breath.

Then named the figure.

I nearly dropped my phone.

Over two hundred thousand dollars.

In less than three years.

My heart pounded.

Two hundred thousand.

Vacations.

Gifts.

Apartments.

Cars.

Luxury handbags.

Ryan had spent our future funding his fantasies.

And he'd hidden it all.

That night I couldn't sleep.

The anger had changed shape.

The affair still hurt.

But now another emotion had arrived.

Fear.

Because financial betrayal often lasted longer than romantic betrayal.

Love could end.

Debt remained.

At two in the morning I opened our banking applications.

Account after account.

Statement after statement.

The more I searched, the worse it became.

Withdrawals.

Transfers.

Credit lines.

Loans.

Things I had never seen before.

Things Ryan had somehow concealed.

My pulse accelerated.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Then I found it.

A business loan.

Large.

Massive.

And dangerously overdue.

I stared at the screen.

The company wasn't thriving.

It was drowning.

Ryan hadn't been taking luxury vacations because he was successful.

He'd been taking them because he was pretending to be successful.

The realization hit like a punch.

The entire image he projected was built on debt.

The next morning Ashley called.

Her voice sounded anxious.

"There's something else."

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

"What?"

"I think Ryan knows we've talked."

I sat upright.

"What makes you think that?"

"He called me fourteen times."

"Fourteen?"

"And he keeps asking what I've told you."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

A guilty man didn't panic about old lies.

He panicked about hidden ones.

"What aren't you telling me, Ashley?"

Silence.

Then:

"I found something a few months ago."

My heartbeat quickened.

"What?"

"A storage unit."

I froze.

"What kind of storage unit?"

"One Ryan rented."

The conversation suddenly felt dangerous.

"What's inside?"

Ashley lowered her voice.

"I don't know."

"Why not?"

"Because after I found the paperwork, he changed the locks."

Every instinct I possessed activated instantly.

Ryan was hiding something.

Not just affairs.

Not just money.

Something physical.

Something important.

Something worth protecting.

Back in Dallas, Ryan Carter was having the worst week of his life.

The Cancun vacation had collapsed.

Ashley wasn't answering his calls.

His wife wasn't answering his calls.

And his carefully managed world was beginning to fracture.

He sat inside his office staring at his phone.

The silence terrified him.

Because Valerie wasn't screaming.

She wasn't threatening.

She wasn't begging.

She wasn't even arguing.

She was simply gone.

And somehow that frightened him more than anger ever could.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

His accountant entered.

Looking nervous.

Very nervous.

Ryan immediately felt his stomach drop.

"What?"

The accountant swallowed.

"We have a problem."

The words no business owner wanted to hear.

"What kind of problem?"

The accountant handed him several folders.

Ryan looked inside.

His face turned white.

Because someone had been reviewing company records.

Recently.

Very recently.

Someone asking questions could destroy everything.

Three days later I returned to Dallas.

The moment I entered our house, I knew something had changed.

The place felt empty.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

As though the illusion had finally evaporated.

Ryan wasn't home.

Good.

I preferred it that way.

I walked directly to the home office.

Opened filing cabinets.

Examined drawers.

Reviewed records.

For years I'd trusted him completely.

That trust had blinded me.

Not anymore.

Hours passed.

Then I found a key.

Tiny.

Metal.

Unmarked.

Hidden inside a hollowed-out book.

A storage key.

My pulse accelerated.

Ashley had been telling the truth.

The storage facility sat on the edge of the city.

Quiet.

Anonymous.

Forgettable.

Exactly the type of place people used when they didn't want questions.

I parked.

Entered.

Presented the key.

The employee checked the number.

Then pointed toward the back.

Unit 314.

My hands shook as I approached.

Every step felt heavier.

The lock clicked open.

The metal door rolled upward.

And I stopped breathing.

Boxes.

Dozens of boxes.

Files.

Documents.

Photographs.

Electronics.

Records.

Years of secrets.

I stepped inside.

Opened the nearest box.

Financial statements.

Hidden accounts.

Offshore transfers.

Corporate records.

My pulse thundered.

The second box contained contracts.

The third contained photographs.

And then I found something that made my knees nearly give out.

A folder bearing my name.

VALERIE CARTER.

I stared.

Opened it.

Inside were legal documents.

Draft divorce papers.

Prepared months ago.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Ryan had been planning.

Planning carefully.

Assets hidden.

Money transferred.

Property shielded.

Everything designed to leave me with almost nothing.

The betrayal suddenly expanded beyond infidelity.

This wasn't a man who had made bad choices.

This was a man preparing an escape.

A man who intended to replace his wife and protect himself while doing it.

I sat down hard on a folding chair.

For a long moment I simply stared.

Then a shadow appeared outside the unit.

I looked up.

A man stood at the entrance.

Watching.

My blood turned cold.

Because I recognized him immediately.

Ryan.

And judging by the look on his face...

He had never expected me to find the storage unit.

For several seconds neither of us moved.

Neither spoke.

The silence felt explosive.

Finally Ryan stepped forward.

"Valerie."

His voice sounded different.

No charm.

No confidence.

No excuses.

Only fear.

Real fear.

I slowly stood.

The divorce papers remained in my hands.

Ryan saw them.

His face fell.

And in that moment he understood something important.

I didn't just know about the affair anymore.

I knew about everything.

The money.

The lies.

The hidden accounts.

The future he'd been secretly planning without me.

The mask was gone.

Forever.

"What are you doing here?" he asked quietly.

I looked around at the mountains of secrets surrounding us.

Then back at the man I'd married.

And for the first time in years, I saw him clearly.

Not powerful.

Not successful.

Not impressive.

Just dishonest.

A frightened man standing inside a warehouse full of lies.

"You should ask yourself that question," I replied.

The color drained from his face.

Because deep down, Ryan finally realized the truth.

The affair wasn't what would destroy him.

May you like

The secrets would.

And I had just found all of them.
