Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three weeks later, the day finally arrived.
The sun shone brightly over Portland, painting the sky in pale shades of gold and blue. The cool autumn air smelled of pine and sea salt—the clean, crisp scent of my home state.
Dr. Lin walked into my suite with a final set of medical charts, a triumphant smile on her face. "Mrs. Miller... Jonah and Elise have met all their weight milestones. Their lung function is perfect. You are officially discharged."
My heart soared. "We get to go home?"
"You get to go home," Dr. Lin confirmed.
Outside the executive wing of the hospital, a procession of four sleek black armored SUVs waited in the courtyard. Standing beside the lead vehicle was General Whitaker, Colonel Vance, and four military guards dressed in crisp uniforms.
I walked out of the hospital sliding doors holding Jonah in a secure chest carrier, while a specialized nurse carried Elise beside me. I was dressed in a soft cashmere sweater, tailored trousers, and my hand-stitched cream-colored wool coat—restored, cleaned, and pristine.
As I reached the lead SUV, General Whitaker opened the door for me himself.
"Where to, Boss?" Edward asked with a warm grin.
I looked at the documents resting inside my purse—the keys to the oceanfront estate in Cape Elizabeth that my legal team had purchased using the liquid assets from the former Harlan estate. A home with six bedrooms, a massive sunlit nursery overlooking the crashing waves, and a private garden where my children could grow up surrounded by peace and safety.
"Take us home, Edward," I said with a radiant, beautiful smile. "Take us to our new life."
As the SUV pulled out of the hospital gates, leaving behind the dark shadows of the past, I looked down at Jonah and Elise resting against my chest.
They were no longer fragile.
May you like
They were strong.
And together, we were unstoppable.
