Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Nursery

Back at the hospital, the silence in Room 412 was so thick you could have cut it with a scalpel.

Diane Mercer had collapsed back into her chair, her hands trembling as she clutched her red thermos. All the haughty arrogance of a woman who believed she sat atop a dynastic pedestal had completely dissolved, leaving behind a terrified, aging woman realizing the floorboards beneath her had turned to ash.

Evan was shaking.

His phone buzzed violently in his hand. He looked down at the screen. It was Marcus Vance, calling from the office.

Evan swiped to answer, pressing the phone to his ear. "Marcus? What the hell is going on? Some process servers just—"

"Evan, you idiot!" Marcus’s voice roared through the speaker, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. "Your wife just slapped a total asset freeze on the entire company! We're locked out of the operating accounts! The corporate card I used for the Capitol Hill lease just declined! Who the hell is Rachel Cole and why were we paying her rent out of operational funds?!"

Evan’s face turned the color of curdled milk. He slowly pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at the glowing screen as the call disconnected.

He looked up at me.

For the first time since I had known him—for the entire four years of our marriage, through every gaslighting argument, every condescending sigh, every patronizing pat on the head—Evan looked like a terrified child standing in front of an adult.

"Claire," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Claire, please. Let's... let's not do this here. Let's talk about this like adults. We have a newborn baby. We can go home, we can sit down, we can work it out—"

"Go home?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. "Which home, Evan? The West Seattle house that belongs to my trust? Or the corporate apartment where Rachel and Mason are currently waiting for you to bring home groceries?"

Diane gasped, clutching her chest. "Rachel? What does Rachel have to do with this? Evan, who is Rachel?"

Evan didn't answer his mother. He stared at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "Claire, I made mistakes. Every man makes mistakes. But breaking up a family? Destroying my business? Leaving our daughter without a father—"

"A father?" I interrupted, my voice sharp enough to draw blood. "Where was the father when you stood at the foot of this bed two hours after birth and declared that our daughter 'gets nothing from your family'? Where was the father when you spent our savings on a woman you abandoned me for?"

"I never abandoned you!" Evan shouted, desperation finally overriding his shock. "I provided for you! I gave you my name!"

"Your name," I said, letting out a cold, humorless laugh. "A name built on borrowed money, fabricated prestige, and my grandfather's timber. You didn't give me anything, Evan. You leeched onto me like a parasite, convinced that because I was quiet and forgiving, I was stupid."

The door opened again.

This time, it was a security guard accompanied by two uniformed Seattle police officers.

The lead officer stepped into the room, scanning the space before fixing his eyes on Evan.

"Mr. Evan Mercer?" the officer asked.

Evan swallowed hard. "Yes?"

"You've been served with a temporary restraining order issued by King County Superior Court, mandating immediate separation from Claire Bennett-Mercer and prohibiting you from entering the marital residence or approaching within five hundred feet of her or the infant child, effective immediately."

The officer stepped forward, holding out a manila envelope.

Evan didn't reach for it. He stood frozen, staring at the badge, staring at me, staring at the tiny bundle of pink blanket sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside my bed.

"You're... you're throwing me out?" Evan whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his cheek. "You're throwing me out on the day my daughter is born?"

"No, Evan," I said, looking straight into his eyes without a trace of pity or regret. "I'm not throwing you out. You checked out of this family the moment you walked into this room with your mistress on your mind. I'm simply locking the door behind you."
