Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

Christopher rushed down from the stage, his face contorted in a terrifying mix of rage and desperation. He grabbed Luke’s shoulder, trying to drag his son away from the podium.
"You ungrateful little brat!" Christopher snarled, dropping his suave act completely. "I built this company! I made you! You think you can ruin me with edited voice files?"
Before Christopher’s hand could tighten on Luke’s suit, I stepped onto the stage platform.
With a single, swift motion, I grabbed Christopher’s wrist, twisting it sharply outward with the self-defense training my father had insisted I take in my twenties. Christopher let out a sharp cry of pain, staggering backward onto the wooden steps.
"Don't touch my son, Christopher," I said, looking down at him with pure, unadulterated contempt. "You didn't build this company. You were a mid-level manager with a nice smile when I met you. My father gave you a seat at his table, and you mistook his generosity for your own greatness."
Luke adjusted his lapels, entirely unbothered by his father's assault attempt. He tapped the tablet again.
The screen changed.
A complex flow chart of offshore bank accounts appeared—tracing transfers from Albright Enterprises' primary holding accounts in Switzerland to a private entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Vance Global LLC.
"Over the past twenty-four months," Luke explained to the silent audience, "my father and Miss Vance embezzled forty-seven million dollars from the Grand Horizon Foundation. They used forged signatures belonging to my mother—who remained the primary trustee after my grandfather's passing."
Arthur Sterling, the head board member, slammed his fist onto Table 1, standing up with absolute fury.
"Is this true, Christopher?" Arthur roared across the room. "You stole from the charity foundation? You forged Vivian’s signature while drugging her?"
"It’s a lie!" Christopher shrieked, scrambling up from the floor, his hair disheveled, his bow tie hanging loose. "She’s crazy! You all know she’s been mentally unstable for two years! She’s framing me! Brenda, tell them!"
He turned to look for Brenda.
Brenda was currently pinned against the marble pillar near the entrance by two uniformed LAPD officers.
A detective stepped forward, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Brenda Vance," Detective Miller announced loudly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder by poisoning, grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
"No! It was Christopher!" Brenda screamed hysterical, her polite accent vanishing, replaced by a shrill, terrifying screech as the cold steel snapped around her wrists. "He made me do it! He was the one who bought the chemicals! He told me he would marry me as soon as Vivian was dead! Christopher, tell them!"
Christopher backed away from her as if she were a wild animal, shaking his head frantically. "I don't know this woman! She was just an assistant! She manipulated everything!"
I walked down the stage steps, stopping three feet in front of my husband.
"You always were a coward, Christopher," I said softly, pulling a thick leather folder from Luke’s briefcase and tossing it onto his chest. "Here are the divorce papers. I’ve already executed the emergency board clause. As of 8:15 PM tonight, your voting rights are suspended, your corporate accounts are frozen, and your tenure as CEO is terminated."
Christopher stared at the folder hitting the floor at his feet.
"You can't do this, Vivian..." he whispered, his eyes wide with a pathetic, sudden panic. "We're a family... Think about Luke!"
Luke walked down the steps, standing beside me, his tall frame blocking the spotlight behind us.

He looked down at his father with a cold, terrifying smile that matched my own.
"Dad," Luke said smoothly into the lapel microphone, his voice broadcasting to every camera in the hall. "You’re paying for everything today."
