Chapter 9 - The Legacy Cleansed

Word of my pregnancy spread quietly, but the joy it brought to our home was boundless.

Ruth broke down in tears when we told her, immediately declaring herself the honorary grandmother and beginning to plan the nursery decorations.

We decided to convert the old guest wing—the very room where Eric and Patricia had plotted their takeover—into a bright, beautiful nursery overlooking the rear gardens. We painted the walls soft shades of cream and sky blue, installed large bay windows to let in the light, and filled the space with handmade wooden furniture crafted by workers from Daniel's company.

One evening, Marcus Vance dropped by the estate to deliver the final legal decrees dissolving the old Mercer family trusts.

We sat on the back patio, watching the sunset over Lake Michigan.

"Patricia sent another letter from Logan Correctional last week," Marcus mentioned casually, taking a sip of lemonade. "She’s appealing her sentence again, claiming her health is failing."

Daniel took a slow sip of his drink, his face completely serene. "What did the appellate judge say?"

"Denied without a hearing," Marcus replied with a faint smile. "The court cited her lack of remorse and the overwhelming nature of the physical evidence. She’ll serve every single day of those thirty-five years."

"And Eric?" I asked.

"Eric was transferred to a maximum-security facility in Pontiac after getting into a fight with another inmate over prison work assignments," Marcus said. "He won't be eligible for a parole hearing until he's nearly sixty."

Daniel set his glass down. "Good. Let them reflect on what greed bought them."

He turned to look at me, taking my hand and placing it gently over my soft, rounded stomach, where a noticeable bump was now showing.

"Their story is over, Marcus," Daniel said softly. "Ours is just beginning."
