Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Foundation

Evelyn refused to leave without a fight. She stormed back into the house, locking herself in the master guest bedroom, threatening to call her lawyers and sue both Daniel and Ryan for slander.

Meanwhile, inside the living room, a heavy, uncomfortable silence settled over us.

Daniel sat at the kitchen island, his head buried in his hands, surrounded by the legal ledgers and bank records Ryan had retrieved from our family’s archive vault that morning.

I stood near the window, my hands wrapped around a mug of warm tea Ryan had poured for me. My wedding dress was still packed away in my suitcase by the front door. The romantic dream of my new life had been thoroughly shattered in less than twenty-four hours.

“Maya...” Daniel began softly, looking up at me with bloodshot, tear-filled eyes. “I... I don't even know what to say. There are no words in the human language that can excuse what I did to you last night.”

“You kicked me out, Daniel,” I said, keeping my voice steady despite the painful lump in my throat. “It wasn't just a minor argument. It was below freezing outside. You listened to your mother over your own wife on the very night we took our vows.”

“I was blind!” Daniel cried out, slamming his fist onto the counter in frustration at himself. “My entire life, she conditioned me to believe that disobeying her meant I was an ungrateful son! Every time I tried to set a boundary, she would play the victim, cry about how much she sacrificed after my father died... I thought I was protecting her honor!”

“And in doing so, you destroyed your wife’s honor,” Ryan interjected sharply from the doorway. “You proved to Maya that the moment your mother demands cruelty, you will deliver it with a smile.”

Daniel flinched as if Ryan had slapped him. He looked at me desperately, taking a step forward, but stopping when Ryan subtly shifted his stance.

“Maya, please,” Daniel begged, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Give me a chance to fix this. I’ll kick her out today. I’ll hand over full control of the trust to you and Ryan. I’ll do whatever it takes—therapy, public apologies, anything. Just... please don't leave me.”

I looked at the man I had loved for two years—the man I thought was kind, gentle, and strong. Seeing him reduced to this broken state filled me with a complex mix of pity and deep, lingering hurt.

“I’m not staying here tonight, Daniel,” I said quietly, setting my tea mug down. “The foundation of our marriage is cracked. You chose your mother over me when I needed you most. Removing her from the house won't automatically heal the fact that you threw me out into the cold.”

“Where are you going?” Daniel asked, his voice cracking.

“I’m staying with Ryan at his apartment,” I replied, picking up my suitcase. “And until you handle your mother legally, financially, and emotionally... do not contact me.”
