Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Foundation

One year after the dinner that changed my life.

It was a crisp, clear Saturday evening in late November.

My Capitol Hill condo was filled with warm yellow light, the rich aroma of roasted turkey and garlic mashed potatoes, and the joyful sound of laughter echoing through the open-concept living room.

Gathered around my long dining table—a beautiful, solid oak table I had bought with my own money—were the people who truly mattered.

My brother Nathan sat at the head, laughing with his wife and children.

Natalie sat beside me, looking vibrant, beautiful, and completely at peace, while her two daughters sat near the window showing off their latest art projects.

Even my old house manager, Teresa—whom I had hired away from the Vance estate after Arthur defaulted on her salary—was sitting at the table as an honored family guest, sipping sparkling cider from a crystal glass.

I stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of white wine, looking around at the bright, smiling faces of the people who had stood by me during the darkest hours of my life.

Nathan tapped his water glass with a spoon, bringing the room to a happy, expectant silence.

"A toast," Nathan announced, standing up beside me. "To Valerie. An architect who doesn't just design buildings... but who built a life that no storm could ever tear down."

Everyone at the table raised their glasses, their voices ringing out in unison: "To Valerie!"

I smiled, feeling a deep, profound warmth spreading through my chest.

I touched the small, almost invisible faint scar near my hairline—the only physical trace remaining from that violent night a year ago.

It no longer felt like a mark of pain.

It felt like a badge of honor. A permanent reminder that when someone tried to break me, I didn't crumble. I stood up, I fought back, and I reclaimed my life on my own terms.

I lifted my glass high under the warm light of my home.

"To foundations," I said softly, looking at the people I loved. "The ones made of steel, love, and truth... the ones that can never be broken."

And as the night carried on, filled with warmth, safety, and boundless hope for the future, I knew without a single doubt that my life was finally, truly my own.
