Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing Shock

The federal courthouse in downtown Minneapolis was packed with reporters, corporate lawyers, and curious onlookers. The story of the wealthy architectural heiress who was assaulted by her socialite husband had made front-page news across the state.

I sat at the prosecution table alongside the Assistant United States Attorney, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, my posture rigid and dignified.

Across the room, at the defense table, sat Jackson. He was wearing an ill-fitting gray suit, his hair unwashed, his face hollow and pale. Beside him sat his newly appointed public defender—his high-priced defense team had resigned two days prior when their retainer checks bounced.

In the second row of the gallery sat Genesis and her husband, looking frail, defeated, and dressed in cheap off-the-rack clothing.

"All rise for Honorable Judge Raymond Vance," the bailiff announced.

Judge Vance—a stern, no-nonsense federal judge with thirty years on the bench—took his seat and adjusted his glasses, looking down at the heavy case file before him.

"We are here for the bail modification and federal indictment hearing in the case of the United States v. Jackson Moretti," Judge Vance began. "Defense counsel, you may present your argument for pre-trial release."

The public defender stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my client is a lifelong resident of Minnesota with no prior criminal record. The incident at the dinner table was a tragic domestic dispute driven by emotional distress. Mr. Moretti is deeply remorseful and is willing to submit to electronic monitoring and a full restraining order."

"Deeply remorseful?" the federal prosecutor interjected, standing up smoothly. "Your Honor, three days ago, the prosecution filed sixteen additional federal counts against Mr. Moretti, including wire fraud, bank fraud, interstate conspiracy, and attempted corporate extortion."

The prosecutor submitted the documents we had recovered from Jackson's safe.

"Furthermore," the prosecutor continued, pointing at the enlarged photo of my stitched forehead displayed on the court monitor, "the defendant committed a violent, unprovoked assault using a heavy ceramic object, causing permanent physical scarring to the victim, purely to intimidate her into signing over corporate real estate assets worth millions."

Judge Vance looked at the photos of my injury, then glared down at Jackson with pure disgust.

"Mr. Moretti," Judge Vance said, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "You didn't just assault your wife. You engaged in a calculated, multi-year financial predatory scheme, capped off by a brutal act of domestic violence in front of a dozen witnesses."

Jackson leaned toward his attorney, whispering frantically: "Say something! Tell him she’s crazy! Tell him she hit herself!"

The public defender winced, pulling away from Jackson slightly. "Your Honor... we request leniency..."

"Request denied," Judge Vance snapped, slamming his gavel down with a thunderous crack. "Bail is revoked permanently. The defendant will remain in federal custody until trial. Court is adjourned."

Two armed federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Jackson’s arms and locking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Evelyn! EVELYN!" Jackson screamed as he was dragged toward the side holding door, his composure completely collapsing. "Please! I love you! Don't do this to me! Tell them to stop!"

I sat at the table, looking directly into his pleading eyes, and didn't utter a single word.
