Chapter 2 - Shadows over Zurich

Rain fell in a steady, silver mist over the cobblestone streets of Zurich, Switzerland. Thousands of miles away from the quiet cemetery in Chicago, Maya Vance sat in the corner of a dimly lit, high-security private bank vault inside the headquarters of Bank Hoffmann & Cie.

She wore a simple dark wool coat, her long dark hair pulled back into a neat, unpretentious bun. Her eyes, once bright and full of warmth, were now hollow pools of dark obsidian. The grief hadn't left her—it lived inside her ribs like a jagged shard of glass, cutting into her with every breath she took—but it had transformed. Grief had burned away her naivety, leaving behind an icy, unstoppable resolve.

Across the mahogany table sat Dr. Henrik Weiss, a senior partner at the firm and a long-time confidant of Maya’s late father, a renowned international attorney.

"Everything has been executed exactly as you instructed, Maya," Dr. Weiss said in quiet, measured German-accented English. "The evidence packets regarding David’s shell companies in the Cayman Islands and Liechtenstein were delivered simultaneously to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the SEC. By now, his personal and corporate accounts in the United States are completely frozen."

Maya did not smile. She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, framed photo. It was a picture of Lily smiling brightly on her seventh birthday, wearing a pink princess crown, holding a stuffed rabbit. Maya placed the photo gently on the table, her thumb lightly tracing the glass over her daughter's face.

"And the offshore funds?" Maya asked softly.

"Retrieved," Dr. Weiss replied, pushing a tablet across the table toward her. "David was foolish. He thought hiding money under his shell company, 'Apex Global Holdings', meant it was untouchable. He forgot that when he made you a director of the holding trust five years ago to dodge tax liability, he gave you full signature authority over the Swiss clearing accounts. The forty-five million dollars he stole from his corporate investors and hid abroad has been legally seized and transferred into the Lily Vance Memorial Foundation."

Maya looked at the numbers on the screen. Forty-five million dollars. The money David had lied for, cheated for, and ultimately chosen over his own family. To David, that money was status, luxury, and power. To Maya, it was blood money.

"It will fund pediatric meningitis research and build emergency medical clinics across underdeveloped regions," Maya said, her voice steady. "He spent his life chasing that wealth. Now it will save children who actually have a chance to live."

"Maya," Dr. Weiss said gently, leaning forward. "The federal authorities in the U.S. will want your formal testimony to seal the prosecution. David’s defense attorneys will try to claim you acted out of malice or framed him."

"Let them try," Maya said, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying fire. "I didn't frame him for anything, Henrik. I simply opened the doors to his secret closets and let the light in. Every bribe he paid, every document he forged, every tax return he falsified—he did it with his own hands out of pure greed. I just handed the keys to the FBI."

Suddenly, Maya’s secondary encrypted phone buzzed on the table. She picked it up. It was a secure message from her private investigator back in Chicago, Detective Ray Miller.

“Julianne has been released on bail. She’s singing like a canary to the prosecutors to save her own skin. David’s legal team is scrambling. He’s being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.”

Maya stared at the text. A faint, bitter curve touched her lips. Julianne, the woman who had spent Maya’s husband’s money and paraded her affair on social media, had turned on him at the very first sight of steel handcuffs.

"Is there anything else you need me to do?" Dr. Weiss asked.

May you like

Maya stood up, carefully placing the framed photo of Lily back into her coat pocket, right over her heart.

"Yes," Maya said quietly. "Book me a flight to New York. The board of directors at Vance Capital is holding an emergency meeting tomorrow morning to handle the crisis. It’s time for the final shareholders' vote."
