Chapter 5 - The Discovery of the Paper Trail

While Julian languished in his cell, my legal team and forensic accountants were systematically dismantling the rotten structure of his corporate empire inside the Vance Financial Tower.

We sat around the large glass conference table, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers, bank statements, and subpoenaed digital drives.

Claire Vance-Cross, my lead attorney and cousin, tossed a thick red binder onto the table in front of me.

“It’s worse than we thought, Maya,” Claire said, taking off her wire-rimmed glasses and rubbing her temples. “Julian wasn't just committing simple asset-stripping. He was running a full-scale Ponzi scheme using local municipal development bonds.”

I opened the binder, scanning the highlighted lines of fraudulent accounting. “Explain.”

“Over the last eighteen months,” Claire demonstrated, pointing to a series of wire transfers, “Julian took money from new, high-net-worth investors—promising them prime commercial real estate in the new riverfront development—and used those funds to pay off the interest debts on his older failed projects. But that’s not all.”

She pulled out a second document—a set of medical authorization forms bearing a forged copy of my signature.

My eyes narrowed. “What is this?”

“Julian attempted to file for an emergency legal guardianship over your medical and financial decisions four days before he served you with divorce papers,” Claire revealed, her voice dripping with rage. “He submitted a falsified psychiatric report to the county court claiming you were suffering from severe early-onset dementia and were mentally incompetent to manage your affairs.”

I felt a cold, sharp prickle run up my spine. “He wanted to declare me incompetent?”

“If you had signed those divorce papers in the hospital,” Claire explained, “or if you had succumbed to your illness during surgery, that guardianship filing would have activated automatically. Julian would have gained total, unchallengeable legal control over every penny of the Vance Family Trust—without needing to go through probate court.”

I sat back in my chair, staring at the forged signature on the paper.

For seven years, I had believed Julian was simply vain, foolish, and self-centered. I had believed his worst flaw was his fragile male ego. I had never imagined that behind his bright dimpled smile lived a man capable of such calculated, monstrous predation.

He hadn't just wanted to leave me. He had wanted to erase me, lock me away in an institution, and dance over the grave of my life with his new bride.

“Maya?” Claire asked softly, reaching across the table to lay her hand over mine. “Are you alright?”

May you like

I slowly closed the binder. The shock in my chest vanished, replaced instantly by an absolute, icy clarity.

“Contact the District Attorney, Claire,” I said, my voice steady and unwavering. “Tell him we are providing full state’s evidence. I don't want a civil settlement anymore. I want Julian Vance prosecuted to the maximum extent of federal law.”
