Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

In the private suite of the military hospital, Juliet sat wrapped in a warm fleece blanket while two nurses carefully adjusted her IV lines. Her father sat in a leather armchair beside her, reviewing digital files on a secure tablet.

“Dad, please,” Juliet whispered, her voice trembling. “Tell me what Preston did. What was inside the nursery safe? We spent weeks building that room together. We picked out the crib, the wallpaper, the painted stars on the ceiling... I don't understand.”

General Hayes set the tablet down and looked at his daughter with profound sadness. “Juliet, when you married Preston three years ago, he presented himself as a self-made financial advisor specializing in estate management. Do you remember when he insisted on handling all the architectural renovations for your home after you moved in?”

Juliet nodded slowly. “Yes. He said he wanted to handle the contractors himself so I wouldn't be stressed. He spent two months working on the master bedroom and the nursery suite.”

“He wasn't renovating, Juliet,” General Hayes said gravely. “He was constructing secret compartments within the structural pillars of the house. For the last two years, Preston’s firm has been acting as a laundering front for an international syndicate known as the Obsidian Group. They deal in illegal asset transfers, corporate espionage, and black-market defense contracts.”

Juliet’s jaw dropped. “No... that’s impossible. Preston is a coward. He cares about expensive suits, fine wine, and pleasing his mother! He couldn't possibly be involved with international criminals!”

“He was their puppet, but a willing one,” her father clarified. “He used your name—the Hayes name—to bypass federal audits. Several high-level financial clearance documents bore your forged signature. He framed you, Juliet. If my team hadn't raided that house today under military jurisdiction, the Department of Justice would have issued an arrest warrant for you within forty-eight hours based on the paper trail Preston deliberately left behind.”

A cold shudder ran down Juliet’s spine. The memory of Preston standing in the kitchen, dressed in his tailored suit, looking down at her as she lay bleeding on the shattered glass, played back in her mind like a horror movie.

“Funny how everything always becomes about you.”

“My mother only turns sixty-five once. You can wait.”

He hadn't just abandoned her because he was selfish. He had left her there because her death—or the loss of the baby—would have created the ultimate distraction, allowing him to finalize his final transaction and leave the country before the law caught up with him.

“He wanted me to die,” Juliet whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. Tears welled in her eyes, hot and bitter. “He knew I was in danger. He knew the baby was in trouble. He wanted us both gone so he could play the grieving husband while fleeing with the money!”

“He underestimated your strength, my sweet girl,” General Hayes said softly, reaching out to wipe a tear from her cheek. “And he completely forgot who your father is.”

At that moment, the double doors of the private suite swung open. Two armed military police officers escorted a woman into the hallway outside. Even through the soundproof glass, Juliet recognized her immediately: Evelyn Vance, Preston’s mother.

Evelyn was dressed in a lavish silk dress, her neck draped in pearls, her face contorted in absolute rage. She was screaming at the guards, waving a designer handbag as if trying to strike them.

“Do you have any idea who I am?” Evelyn’s muffled shrieks echoed into the room as the doors were briefly opened. “My family built this town’s financial sector! You have no right to detain me! I demand to see my son immediately! Juliet, you ungrateful little monster, tell these thugs to release me!”

General Hayes stood up slowly, adjusting his military tunic. He looked at Juliet with a reassuring nod. “Rest now, Juliet. I will handle Evelyn.”

The General stepped out into the corridor, closing the door firmly behind him. Juliet watched through the glass panel as her father approached the hysterical woman.

“Evelyn Vance,” General Hayes said, his voice cutting through her shrieks like a sharp blade.

“Martin!” Evelyn sneered, attempting to regain her composure by smoothing her silk dress. “Thank goodness you’re here! Your trigger-happy soldiers broke into my birthday dinner at the estate! They dragged me out in front of fifty high-profile guests! Tell them to arrest Juliet instead—she’s the one who’s been managing Preston’s home accounts! She’s trying to ruin my family!”

General Hayes didn't flinch. He walked right up to Evelyn until he was standing inches away from her face.

“Your son left my daughter lying in her own blood on a cold tile floor,” the General said, his voice dropped to a deadly whisper. “He turned off his phone while my grandson’s heart rate plummeted to near zero. And while he was doing that, he was utilizing a shell company registered in your name, Evelyn, to move forty million dollars in illegal funds.”

Evelyn’s aristocratic composure shattered completely. Her eyes darted left and right, her lips trembling. “I... I don't know what you’re talking about. I’m just a mother... I only wanted what was best for Preston...”

“You and your son are facing federal treason, grand larceny, and conspiracy charges,” General Hayes said mercilessly. “You will not see Preston today. You will not see my grandson ever again. Guards, process her.”

As the military police pulled Evelyn away, kicking and screaming into the elevator, General Hayes turned back toward Juliet’s room. But before he could step inside, a nurse rushed up to him with an urgent expression.

“General Hayes! It’s the NICU! Baby Elliot’s monitors are flashing—you and your daughter need to come immediately!”
