Chapter 4 - The Midday Arrival

Daniel drove up the driveway with a smug, self-satisfied smile on his face, pointing out the grand estate grounds to his mother in the rear-view mirror. I could see Gloria in the passenger seat of the car behind him, leaning forward, her face painted with that familiar, imperious scowl.

Then Daniel hit the brakes so hard his tires screeched against the gravel.

Through the clear glass windows of my living room, I watched his face undergo a horrifying, magnificent transformation. The smugness evaporated, replaced by utter, incomprehensible shock.

The front garden looked like an explosion at a luxury department store.

His bespoke navy coats were soaking up muddy melted snow on the lawn. His expensive silk shirts were scattered across the hydrangeas. Hundreds of pages of his personal financial statements and bank receipts were blowing gently through the frosty winter wind, catching on the bushes.

Gloria slammed her car door open, stepping out directly into a pile of Daniel’s custom leather dress shoes.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Gloria’s screech echoed across the quiet courtyard, sharp enough to cut through the glass. “Daniel! What has that crazy girl done to your clothes?!”

Daniel burst out of his Mercedes, his face flushed dark red with explosive rage. He didn't look at his clothes; he looked straight at the grand double doors of the house.

He stormed up the stone steps, grabbed the brass handle, and yanked it.

The door didn't move.

He punched his six-digit security code into the digital keypad. A harsh, red error light flashed, accompanied by a sharp, electronic beep: ACCESS DENIED.

“Claire!” Daniel roared, slamming his fist against the solid oak door with enough force to rattle the brass knocker. “Open this door right now! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!”

I didn't answer. I didn't move from my spot behind the glass window.

From around the corner of the garage, Marcus Vance and three large, uniformed private security officers stepped into view. Simultaneously, a county sheriff’s cruiser pulled into the driveway, its lights flashing red and blue against the snow.

Daniel froze, his fist hovering in the air.

Deputy Sheriff Miller stepped out of the cruiser, holding a clipboard and a legal folder.

“Daniel Vance?” Deputy Miller called out, his voice booming across the courtyard. “Step away from the door, sir.”

Gloria rushed up the steps, grabbing her son’s arm, her voice rising to a frantic shriek. “Officer! Arrest that woman inside! She’s destroyed my son’s property! She’s locked him out of his own house!”

Deputy Miller didn't even look at Gloria. He walked up the steps, pulled a stamped legal document from his folder, and handed it directly to Daniel.

“You’ve been served with an emergency order of protection, Mr. Vance,” Deputy Miller said deadpan. “You are ordered to stay five hundred feet away from Mrs. Claire Vance and this residence. You have ten minutes to collect your personal effects from the lawn and leave the premises, or you will be taken into custody immediately.”
