Chapter 7 - The Settlement War

The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of legal warfare, corporate liquidations, and deep emotional reckoning.
With Sarah’s father pulling his substantial trust funding out of Vanguard Real Estate and filing suit for breach of fiduciary duty, the firm collapsed almost overnight. David was forced into personal bankruptcy as Sarah’s high-powered divorce attorneys dismantled his assets with surgical precision.
Mark didn't fare much better. Because he had used our joint accounts and corporate funds to facilitate David’s illicit activities and had concealed material financial liabilities from me, my legal team—led by an unrelenting family law specialist named Eleanor Vance (no relation to David)—had absolute leverage.
We sat in a sterile glass conference room on the twenty-second floor of a downtown skyscraper for our first mediation session. Mark sat across from me, accompanied by a haggard-looking lawyer who looked like he hadn't slept in days.
Mark looked defeated. The corporate confidence he had carried for years was completely gone.
"We are offering a full waiver of alimony," Mark's attorney began, sliding a document across the table. "Mark is willing to surrender his claim to the marital home, provided Hannah agrees not to pursue civil damages regarding the business assets."
Eleanor didn't even pick up the paper. She pushed it back with the tip of her pen.
"Unacceptable," Eleanor said smoothly. "Your client engaged in fraudulent concealment of joint assets, used marital funds to finance an illegal affair's logistics, and caused severe emotional distress during an active medical procedure. We aren't just keeping the house. We are demanding eighty percent of the liquidated capital from Mark's remaining equity in Vanguard, plus full indemnification for all medical costs incurred during the three years of failed IVF."
Mark gasped. "That will leave me with practically nothing! I'm living in a rented studio apartment, Hannah!"
I leaned forward across the polished mahogany table, looking my soon-to-be ex-husband directly in the eyes.
"You told me that one woman's pregnancy shouldn't destroy a family, Mark," I said, my voice smooth and devoid of malice. "Consider this a financial reorganization. You were willing to sacrifice my sanity to protect your business. Now you can sacrifice your business to pay for your choices."

His lawyer leaned over, whispered frantically in Mark's ear for thirty seconds, and then looked up at us with a resigned sigh.
"Where do we sign?"
