Chapter 2 - The Viral Firestorm

By 7:00 AM, the sun was rising over the misty skyline of Chicago, casting a cold, orange glow across Lake Michigan. Inside ICU Room 214, Claire opened her heavy eyes.

The world was gray and sterile. The steady rhythm of a heart monitor sounded beside her head. She tried to sit up, but a fiery blade of pain ripped through her abdominal incision, forcing a quiet groan from her lips.

"Claire! Don't move!"

Rachel instantly rose from the bedside chair. Her eyes were bloodshot, her hair unwashed, but her presence was a anchor in the chaos. She gently pushed Claire back onto the pillows.

"Where... where is she?" Claire’s voice was barely a raspy whisper. "Where is Hope?"

"She’s in the NICU, tiny room three," Rachel said softly, taking Claire's weak hand. "I saw her an hour ago through the glass. She’s small, Claire, so tiny... but she’s breathing. The doctors said her stats stabilized overnight."

Tears trickled down Claire's pale cheeks. "I want to see her, Rachel. I need to see my baby."

"I know, sweetie, I know. But you had a massive blood transfusion. Dr. Vance said you can't leave this bed until your blood pressure stabilizes. I promise, as soon as they give the green light, I’ll wheel you down there myself."

Claire closed her eyes, remembering the nightmare at Bellini's. The image of Sienna Blake’s smug face, the cold impact of the cake, the sickening laughter of Grant’s coworkers, and Grant... standing there, looking at her not with love, but with cowardly fear.

"Grant..." Claire breathed out, her hands clenching into tight fists against the bedsheets. "Is he here?"

"He tried to come," Rachel said, her voice darkening instantly. "He showed up in the lobby around 3:00 AM crying like a pathetic child, trying to demand entry. Dad met him downstairs."

Claire blinked. "Dad?"

"Dad nearly broke his jaw," Rachel admitted without a shred of regret. "Security had to pull Dad off him. Dad told him that if he stepped foot on the maternity floor, he’d kill him. Grant ran off. He’s been blowing up my phone all night. I blocked him, but he’s leaving voicemails from burner numbers."

Claire looked away toward the window. The betrayal felt like a physical poison coursing through her veins. Ten years together. Five years of marriage. They had built a home, planned a future, talked about growing old on the porch of a suburban house. And it had all been a hollow farce.

"Claire..." Rachel hesitated, pulling her smartphone from her purse. "There’s something else you need to know. Something I did."

Claire looked back at her sister, confused. "What did you do?"

"When Sienna attacked you... when everyone stood there laughing... I didn't turn off my phone. I was recording the toast." Rachel swallowed hard. "Last night, while you were in surgery, I was so angry... I posted the video online."

Claire’s eyes widened slightly. "You... you posted it?"

Rachel turned the phone screen toward Claire.

"I didn't think it would go this far," Rachel said softly. "Look."

The internet was in an absolute fury. The hashtag #JusticeForClaire was trending at number one nationwide on X (formerly Twitter). #GrantMorgan and #SiennaBlake were numbers two and three.

Rachel scrolled down to show her the comments:

Claire stared at the screen in disbelief. Her private agony, her ultimate humiliation, was now public domain. Millions of strangers were watching the worst moment of her life.

"Rachel..." Claire’s voice broke. "Why?"

"Because he was going to spin this, Claire!" Rachel insisted passionately, taking Claire’s hands. "You know how Grant is! He has high-priced lawyers on retainer. He would have claimed you fell, or that it was a misunderstanding, or that you were unstable! He would have tried to take custody of Hope using his money! I needed the world to see the truth before he could cover it up."

Claire looked at her sister. The initial shock began to melt, replaced by a strange, sharp sense of clarity.

Rachel was right. Grant was a master of narrative manipulation. Whenever they argued, he somehow always twisted things until Claire was apologizing for being "too emotional." If this had stayed behind closed doors, Grant and his wealthy family would have swept it under the rug, portrayed Claire as an unfit, hysterical mother, and tried to ruin her.

Now, the light of fifteen million eyes was burning through his camouflage.

Suddenly, the TV hanging on the wall of the ICU room, which was tuned quietly to Good Morning America, changed its graphic banner.

A sleek red graphic flashed across the screen: BREAKING NEWS: VIRAL CAKE ASSAULT SPARKS NATIONWIDE OUTRAGE.

Claire and Rachel both stared at the screen in shock.

The news anchor, a stern-faced woman, began speaking: "A horrifying video recorded at an exclusive Chicago restaurant has taken the internet by storm this morning. The footage shows Sienna Blake, a Chicago interior designer, hurling a birthday cake at Claire Morgan, who was eight months pregnant at the time. The victim’s husband, Grant Morgan—a high-profile executive at investment firm Morgan & Sterling—stood by silently while colleagues laughed. Moments later, Mrs. Morgan collapsed as her water broke prematurely."

The TV cut to a live reporter standing outside the corporate headquarters of Morgan & Sterling in downtown Chicago.

"We are standing outside the high-rise offices of Morgan & Sterling," the reporter said, holding a microphone amidst a sea of angry protesters who had already gathered at 8:00 AM holding signs that read FIRE GRANT MORGAN and PROTECT CLAIRE. "Company representatives have just issued an emergency statement. They confirm that Grant Morgan has been suspended immediately pending an internal investigation into professional misconduct and public endangerment."

Claire sank back into her pillows, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Grant’s precious career—the only thing he truly cared about, the reason he had spent eighty hours a week at the office—was crumbling in real-time on national television.

Before Claire could process it, a heavy knock sounded at the door of her room.

Two uniformed police officers walked into the room, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray business suit carrying a leather briefcase.

"Claire Morgan?" the lead officer asked gently, removing his hat. "I'm Officer Ramirez, Chicago PD. This is Detective Alvarez."

Claire nodded slowly. "Yes. I'm Claire."

"We’re sorry to disturb you under these circumstances, Mrs. Morgan," Detective Alvarez said, stepping forward. "We’ve seen the video that was published online, and we’ve reviewed the medical reports from Dr. Vance. Given that your baby was born prematurely as a direct result of physical trauma and distress from an assault, the State Attorney's office is opening a criminal investigation."

"Criminal charges?" Claire whispered.

"Yes," Alvarez stated firmly. "Sienna Blake was arrested two hours ago at her residence. She is currently in custody, facing charges of felony assault, reckless endangerment, and battery on a pregnant person."

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "And Grant?"

"Mr. Morgan is currently being questioned regarding accomplice liability and failure to render aid to a person in severe distress," Detective Alvarez replied. "We are here to take your official statement whenever you feel strong enough to give it."

Claire looked at Rachel, who gave her an encouraging nod. Then Claire looked down at her bare left ring finger. She had taken off her wedding ring before going into surgery, leaving behind a faint, pale imprint where the diamond had sat for five years.

She looked back up at the police detective. The weak, frightened woman who had let Grant walk all over her for years was gone, burned away in the furnace of OR 4.

"I’m ready to give my statement," Claire said, her voice steady and ringing with absolute clarity. "I want to press every single charge possible."
