Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

The conference room at Apex Genetics was silent as a tomb.

Outside, a heavy morning rain streaked the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, blurring the gray city skyline.

Dr. Evelyn Vance sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table. In front of her lay a thick, white folder bearing a red wax seal and an official state forensic stamp.

I sat on the left side of the table with my father. Emma was at home with my sister Rachel, far away from the toxic blast zone about to detonate.

On the right side sat Daniel and Patricia.

Patricia looked triumphant. She held her head high, wearing a sleek silver dress, confident that even if the paternity test proved Daniel was the father, she had succeeded in driving an irreparable wedge into our marriage.

Daniel looked hollow. He sat stiffly, his eyes staring blankly at the red wax seal on the folder.

"Good morning," Dr. Vance began, her professional voice cutting through the heavy air. "We have completed the 24-marker STR DNA comparison, along with the deep-sequencing genomic lineage analysis requested for the estate of Emma Hayes."

"Please, Dr. Vance," Patricia interrupted smoothly, waving her manicured hand. "Let's skip the scientific jargon. Just read the paternity probability percentage so we can move forward with the legal proceedings."

Dr. Vance gave Patricia a long, unblinking look. "Mrs. Hayes, the science is the entire point of this process. I will read the report in its full legal sequence."

Dr. Vance broke the red wax seal with a silver letter opener. She pulled out three distinct, color-coded parchment reports.

"First," Dr. Vance stated, looking directly at Daniel. "Regarding the primary paternity locus test between Daniel Richard Hayes and the minor child, Emma Claire Hayes."

Daniel held his breath, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.

"The DNA profile of Daniel Richard Hayes matches the obligate paternal alleles of the minor child, Emma Claire Hayes, across all twenty-four tested loci," Dr. Vance read clearly. "The probability of paternity is ninety-nine point nine nine nine eight percent. Daniel Hayes IS the biological father of Emma Hayes."

The words echoed off the glass walls.

Daniel let out a long, ragged gasp, dropping his head into his hands. A sharp, audible sob tore from his throat. "She's mine... she's really mine..."

I sat motionless, my face stoic. There was no joy in hearing the truth I had known every second of my life. There was only a cold, sharp validation.

"Of course," Daniel wept, reaching across the table toward me. "Claire... oh God, Claire, I'm so sorry—"

"Do not touch me, Daniel," I said, my voice dropping an octave, cold enough to freeze water. "Let the doctor finish."

Patricia's face had darkened slightly, but she quickly smoothed her expression into a sneer. "Well! Fine! So she didn't cheat! But that still doesn't explain where those blue eyes came from! Two hazel/brown-eyed parents carrying such a rare recessive trait—it's still mathematically absurd!"

"Actually, Mrs. Hayes," Dr. Vance interrupted, her tone sharp as a scalpel, "that brings us to the second part of our report—the genomic lineage screen."

Patricia froze. The color slowly began to drain from her lips. "What secondary report?"

Dr. Vance lifted the second sheet of parchment. "When Mr. Arthur Hayes requested the extended screen, we analyzed the deep autosomal recessive markers on Mr. Daniel Hayes's paternal chromosome line. To establish the precise origin of the blue-eye gene (OCA2/HERC2 allele variant), we mapped Daniel's paternal markers against regional population databases."

Dr. Vance looked up, her gaze fixing directly on Patricia.

"And what we discovered, Mrs. Hayes, was a genetic impossibility regarding your late husband, Richard Hayes."
