Chapter 2 - The Dining Room Becomes a Courtroom

The lead investigator, a tall woman with steel-gray hair and an expression that looked carved from granite, stepped forward. She flashed a gold badge and a set of laminated documents.

“My name is Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation,” she announced. Her voice was devoid of emotion, operating with the terrifying efficiency of a machine. “We are here to execute a federal arrest warrant.”

Owen’s face went entirely white, the flush of wine instantly draining from his cheeks. He stood up so fast his chair scraped violently against the hardwood floor.

“There... there must be some kind of mistake,” Owen stammered, his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of the table. “This is a private family dinner. My father is Richard Whitmore, of Whitmore Holdings—”

“We are not here for your father, Mr. Whitmore,” Agent Miller interrupted, her eyes locking onto Owen like a targeting laser. “We are here for you. Owen Whitmore, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, identity theft, and the unauthorized transfer of restricted assets linked to a national security consultant.”

Margaret let out a sharp, strangled gasp. “What? That’s absurd! My son is a businessman! He just sold a piece of property—a family transaction!”

“A family transaction?” Agent Miller turned her gaze to Margaret, then back to Owen. “Your son forged the signature of a federal contractor, accessed a government-monitored secure database to retrieve title information, and deposited sixty thousand dollars of illicit funds into a joint account that has now been flagged for immediate seizure.”

Owen looked at Violet, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and sudden, ugly realization. “Violet... what did you do? What did you tell them?”

“I didn't tell them anything, Owen,” Violet said, her voice incredibly calm. She pulled out her chair and finally sat down, crossing her legs. She picked up her wine glass, took a slow sip, and set it down. “I didn't have to. When I took my contract with the Department of Energy four months ago, every asset in my name was placed under a protective federal monitoring program. Any attempt to sell, transfer, or modify those assets without a multi-step biometric verification from me automatically triggers a federal fraud investigation.”

She leaned forward, her eyes cold. “You thought you were breaking into a kitchen safe, Owen. You didn't realize you were breaking into a federal vault.”

“No,” Owen whispered. He turned to his father. “Dad, call the lawyers. Call Arthur. Now!”

Richard, whose face had gone from smug satisfaction to a sickly shade of gray, reached for his phone with trembling fingers. But before he could dial, the second agent stepped forward.

“Mr. Richard Whitmore,” the agent said. “I would advise you to keep your hands where we can see them. Any attempt to alter, delete, or transfer funds from any accounts associated with your son or Whitmore Holdings tonight will be treated as obstruction of justice and complicity in a federal crime.”

“Complicity?” Richard’s voice cracked. “I had nothing to do with this!”

“We heard you, Dad,” Mason muttered, his voice trembling as he shrank back into his chair, trying to distance himself from Owen. “We all heard Owen say he did it himself.”

“Mason, shut up!” Owen screamed, his composure completely shattering. “Violet, please! Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them we’re married, everything is shared! It’s just a cabin!”

“It was my cabin, Owen,” Violet said. “Bought with the money my grandmother left me. The money you and your family called 'peanuts' compared to your grand holdings. Well, those peanuts just cost you your freedom.”

Agent Miller stepped behind Owen, pulling a pair of heavy, metallic handcuffs from her belt. “Hands behind your back, Mr. Whitmore.”

“Violet! Violet, look at me!” Owen cried out as the cold steel clicked around his wrists. “You can’t do this to me! We’re a family!”

May you like

“No,” Violet said, looking him dead in the eye. “You are a thief. And tonight, your family is just an audience.”

As Owen was led out of the dining room in handcuffs, his boots dragging against the floor, Margaret broke into loud, hysterical sobs. Sarah sat frozen, her hand moving slowly away from Owen’s empty chair, while Richard stared at the forged documents on the table as if they were a bomb that had just detonated in his hands.
