Chapter 3 - The Eviction at Hawthorne Ridge

At 4:30 PM that same afternoon, two marked Lake Forest police cruisers pulled up to the security gates of 18 Hawthorne Ridge.

Vanessa Cole was in the grand kitchen, taking photographs of the marble island to post on her lifestyle blog, when the doorbell rang loudly.

She opened the massive oak front door expecting a catering delivery that Grant had promised to order for dinner. Instead, she was met by two uniformed deputies holding an official yellow envelope stamped with the seal of the Cook County Circuit Court.

"Vanessa Cole?" the lead deputy asked, confirming her identity.

"Yes?" Vanessa replied, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Is there a problem?"

"Ma'am, you are being served with an Emergency Order of Protection and a Notice of Immediate Eviction for unlawful detainer," the deputy announced, handing her the papers. "This property is private trust real estate owned exclusively by Dr. Eleanor Bennett. You and your possessions must clear the premises within forty-five minutes."

Vanessa stared at the paper in total disbelief. Her face drained of color as her eyes skimmed the legal jargon: Trespass... Immediate Removal... Contempt of Court...

"This is a mistake!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away from the door. "My husband... I mean, Grant Vance gave me permission to be here! His family owns this!"

"Mr. Grant Vance has no ownership record on this title, ma'am," the second deputy stated firmly, looking past her at the boxes stacked in the foyer. "We have orders to escort you off the property. A professional moving crew contracted by the trustee is currently en route to pack your belongings and deliver them to a commercial storage facility."

"You can't do this! My daughter is upstairs taking a nap!"

"Then I suggest you wake her and gather her personal items, ma'am," the deputy said, unclipping a body camera on his vest. "Because at 5:15 PM, the locks on this gate and every door on this estate will be electronically re-keyed."

Panic, pure and unadulterated, swept over Vanessa. She grabbed her phone with trembling hands and dialed Grant’s direct office line.

Grant answered on the first ring, his voice already strained and panicked. "Vanessa? What's wrong? I'm in the middle of an emergency meeting with my CFO—"

"Grant! They're evicting me!" Vanessa screamed into the receiver, her voice echoing through the high ceilings of the empty mansion. "The police are here! They're threatening to arrest me if I don't leave in forty minutes! Eleanor filed an order against us!"

"What?" Grant shouted. "That's impossible! I told her—"

"She blocked my phone! She blocked your cards! The movers are here right now taking the pink Steinway out of the house!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically. "Grant, do something! Where am I supposed to go with Chloe?"

Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds as the brutal reality began to settle into Grant's mind. His wife—the quiet, accommodating pianist who had spent thirteen years accommodating his demands—had just launched a tactical legal strike against him.

"Stay there," Grant gritted out through his teeth. "I'm coming."

When Grant arrived twenty minutes later, tires screeching against the gravel driveway, the scene was utter chaos.

A team of commercial locksmiths was already working on the front gates. Two heavy-duty moving trucks were backed up to the porch, carefully reloading the pink Steinway and Vanessa's leather luggage. Vanessa sat on the hood of her Range Rover near the driveway entrance, holding a weeping Chloe while two police officers stood nearby, ensuring no property was damaged.

Grant jumped out of his vehicle, his face flushed red with rage.

"Officer! Stop this immediately!" Grant demanded, marching toward the deputies. "I am Grant Vance! I am the husband of the owner!"

The lead deputy stepped into his path, placing a hand calmly on his belt. "Sir, step back. Dr. Eleanor Bennett’s legal representative provided a certified court order signed by Judge Mercer. You are not listed as an authorized party on this deed. If you interfere with the execution of this order, you will be placed under arrest for obstruction."

"She is my wife!" Grant roared.

"Then I suggest you talk to her divorce lawyer, sir," the deputy replied coldly. "Because as of three o'clock today, she has officially served Vance Capital Holdings with a spousal freeze on all joint financial accounts."

Grant stood frozen on the driveway as the heavy iron gates swung closed behind the officers, locking him out of the estate completely.

Vanessa ran over to him, clutching his arm, her makeup smeared with tears. "Grant... where are we going to stay tonight? All my things are in those trucks!"

May you like

Grant looked at Vanessa, then at the locked gates of Hawthorne Ridge, and finally down at his phone, which was exploding with frantic email alerts from his board of directors regarding frozen corporate line assets.

For the first time in his life, Grant Vance realized he was no longer in control.
