Chapter 5 - The War Room at Dawn

By 6:00 AM, the sun was beginning to rise over the glass towers of downtown Austin, painting the sky in pale shades of gold and violet.
I sat in a high-backed leather chair inside the private war room of the Federal Building on 8th Street. A medical team had spent forty-five minutes re-dressing my injuries, securing my broken ribs with professional medical braces, and giving me an intravenous painkiller that finally erased the sharp edge of the agony in my knee.
I wore a clean dark grey suit that Julian’s assistant had brought for me, my dark hair pulled back into a tight, professional knot. Aside from a pale bruise along my cheekbone, I looked like what I was: a senior financial officer ready to deliver a fatal blow to a corrupt corporation.
Sitting across the long conference table was Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Jenkins—a razor-sharp woman in her late forties with cold blue eyes and a reputation for dismantling white-collar criminal syndicates. Beside her sat Julian Vance, three forensic accountants, and two senior FBI agents.
In the center of the table, connected to a secure federal laptop, lay my silver USB drive.
"The audio quality is crystal clear," Prosecutor Jenkins said, her fingers clicking through the digital waveform files on her monitor. She paused the recording, letting Margaret Carter’s voice echo through the sterile room:
"If the pension board asks about the forty-two million dollar gap in the Q3 reserve, tell them it was reinvested in the Singapore expansion. By the time they audit the Singapore books, the shell firm will be dissolved, and the funds will be secured in Zurich under Brandon's private trust. If anyone hesitates, remind them who pays their legal retainers."
Jenkins paused the tape, turning her cold gaze toward me. "And this second audio file... recorded on the balcony yesterday afternoon?"
"I had an automatic voice-activation app running on my smartwatch that mirrored to the drive via short-range local mesh," I explained, my voice steady and cold. "When Brandon put his hands on my chest, the watch captured everything."
Jenkins pressed play.
Brandon: "Give me the phone, Victoria! You're not ruining my family!" Victoria: "Brandon, step back! That railing is—" [Sound of a heavy impact, followed by a sharp scream and the sound of wind] Brandon: "Is she... is she moving?" Margaret: "She deserved it. The evidence is gone. Even if you aren't dead, there's nothing you can do now."
The federal agents in the room exchanged long, grim looks.
"That isn't just financial fraud, corporate embezzlement, and wire fraud," Prosecutor Jenkins declared, closing the laptop with a heavy, decisive click. "That is attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering."
"The Carter Enterprises board meeting is scheduled for two hours from now," Julian Vance interjected, leaning forward over his notebook. "Margaret has called every major shareholder to the penthouse suite at the Carter Tower. She intends to sign the final authorization papers that sell forty-nine percent of the company’s operating assets to a Luxembourg front company controlled by her brother."
"If she signs those papers," Jenkins noted, "the forty-two million dollars in stolen pension funds will be legally merged into foreign assets, making recovery nearly impossible for the factory workers."
I stood up from my chair, ignoring the dull ache in my ribs as the medical brace supported my posture.
"She won't sign those papers," I said, looking Prosecutor Jenkins directly in the eyes. "Because I am going to walk into that boardroom and deliver the shareholder report myself."
Jenkins raised an eyebrow. "Mrs. Carter... you are the primary victim and state's witness in a federal criminal investigation. We can arrest Margaret and Brandon at their residence right now."
"If you arrest them at home," I countered, "their corporate lawyers will post bail within two hours, file emergency injunctions, and delay the asset seizure for months. But if you arrest them in front of the full board of directors while the buyout is being executed, the board will be forced to vote for an immediate receivership, freezing every asset they own before they can touch a single dollar."
May you like
Prosecutor Jenkins stared at me for three long seconds. A slow, dangerous smile crept across her lips.
"Get federal arrest warrants signed by Judge Miller immediately," Jenkins ordered her agents. "And prepare a tactical escort. Mrs. Vance is going to her board meeting."
