Chapter 7 - The Master of Oak Lawn

Five days later.

The Texas sun beat down mercilessly on the half-constructed steel skeleton of the Oak Lawn Luxury Tower in downtown Dallas. Construction cranes stood frozen against the sky, their engines silent, their crews sitting in the shade of the staging trailers, waiting for news regarding their unpaid wages.

At ten o'clock sharp, a fleet of three black Cadillacs pulled onto the dusty construction site, followed by a large mobile bank command unit.

The side door of the lead Cadillac opened, and Vanessa Vance-Sterling stepped out onto the concrete pad.

She wore a crisp white hard hat over her styled hair, high-waisted gray trousers, and a black leather jacket. Beside her walked Julian Sterling, Arthur Vance, and Marcus Thorne—the court-appointed receiver.

The site supervisor, a burly man named Dave wearing a dusty high-vis vest, stepped out of the trailer, looking anxious. He held a clipboard crammed with unpaid material invoices.

"Are you the folks from the bank?" Dave asked nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Because my guys haven't been paid in two weeks. Mr. Sterling’s office isn't answering the phone, and the rumors are saying the whole project is going into federal bankruptcy."

Vanessa walked up to Dave, a warm, genuine smile on her face as she extended her hand. "Hello, Dave. I'm Vanessa Vance-Sterling. I am the new sole owner and executive developer of the Oak Lawn project."

Dave blinked, looking confused. "Sterling? Are you... Nathan’s wife?"

"I am his former wife," Vanessa corrected smoothly. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, Vance-Sterling Global Development has purchased one hundred percent of the bank debt and foreclosed on the property. Sterling Development Group no longer has any legal connection to this site."

She signaled to Arthur, who handed Dave a thick certified check made out to the primary contractor firm.

"This is a cashier's check for six hundred and forty thousand dollars," Vanessa explained. "It covers every penny of outstanding labor and material costs owed to your men, plus a ten percent hardship bonus for the delay."

Dave stared down at the check, his jaw practically hitting his chest. "Six hundred... ma'am... you're paying us in full right now?"

"Every single worker on this site will have their direct deposit cleared by noon today," Vanessa said firmly. "We are resuming construction immediately tomorrow morning. But under new management, and under a new name."

She turned and pointed toward the massive mesh banner hanging across the upper scaffolding facing the highway.

Two workers on the upper deck pulled a release cord. The old banner reading STERLING LUXURY TOWERS - A NATHAN STERLING DEVELOPMENT dropped away into the dust, replaced by a massive, gold-and-black banner that unrolled across thirty feet of steel:

THE VANCE-STERLING TOWER DALLAS — ASHEVILLE — LONDON

Dave looked at the new banner, then back at Vanessa, a massive grin breaking across his dusty face. He tipped his hard hat to her. "Ms. Vance-Sterling... my crew will work twenty hours a day for you. Just say the word."

"Thank you, Dave," Vanessa smiled. "Get your men fed and rested. We build tomorrow."

As Dave hurried back toward the trailers to break the news to his cheering crew, Julian walked up beside Vanessa, looking up at the massive steel structure framing the Dallas skyline.

"You took his crown jewel, turned it into a family asset, and earned the total loyalty of his workforce in less than an hour," Julian observed, a deep chuckle rolling in his chest. "Your father would have given you a standing ovation."

"Nathan tried to build an empire out of vanity and stolen money, Uncle Julian," Vanessa said, taking off her hard hat as they walked back toward the Cadillacs. "I build things out of steel, honor, and cash."

"And what about Nathan's trial?" Arthur asked, opening the car door for her. "The district attorney is asking if you want to accept a plea bargain."

May you like

Vanessa stopped near the open door, looking back at the rising tower one last time.

"Tell the district attorney that I will not agree to any plea deal that doesn't include a minimum of ten years in a federal penitentiary," Vanessa said flatly. "Nathan wanted me to learn my place. I want him to have ten long years to reflect on his."
