Chapter 2 - THE ERUPTION AT ST. JUDE

By 10:00 P.M., Lily’s temperature had dropped to 100.2°F thanks to immediate intravenous antipyretics and fluids. The pediatric team confirmed that she was suffering from an acute viral infection that could have triggered febrile seizures if left untreated for another hour.

I sat in an armchair beside her hospital bed, holding her small, cool hand as she slept peacefully under the warm blankets.

The quiet hum of the heart monitor was interrupted by heavy, deliberate footsteps echoing down the tiled corridor.

The heavy door of the private suite opened.

Standing in the doorway was Vance Montgomery.

He was sixty-two years old, tall, broad-shouldered, with silver hair, sharp grey eyes, and wearing a tailored charcoal trench coat over a dark suit. Beside him were two men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases—Sarah Lin, his head of forensic accounting, and Attorney Richard Sterling, one of the most feared corporate litigators in the country.

Vance walked softly into the room, stepping over to the bed. He looked down at sleeping Lily, his eyes softening with deep, grandfatherly affection, before turning his gaze to me.

He reached out, his warm thumb gently brushing the light purple bruise setting across my left cheekbone. His jaw tightened.

"Did he do this?" Vance asked softly.

"Yes," I whispered.

Vance took a deep breath, stepping back, looking at Attorney Sterling. "Richard, ensure the hospital security footage of Clara’s arrival is secured. Obtain the medical chart documenting her facial trauma alongside Lily’s pediatric report."

"Already done, Vance," Sterling replied, opening his folder. "The domestic violence report has been drafted for the county prosecutor."

Suddenly, loud, arrogant voices rang out from the nurses' station down the hallway.

"I am her father! You cannot restrict me from seeing my daughter!" Brian’s loud, demanding voice carried through the floor.

"And I am her grandmother!" Donna’s shrill voice joined in. "We have every legal right to be in that room! That woman kidnapped my granddaughter from a family event!"

I flinched involuntarily, my grip tightening on Lily’s hand.

Vance placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Stay with your daughter, Clara. Let me handle my nephew."

Vance turned and walked out into the corridor, closing the heavy wooden door behind him. I stood up and watched through the rectangular glass partition.

Brian and Donna were marching down the hall, flanked by two hospital security guards who were trying to hold them back. Brian was wearing an unpressed dress shirt, his hair disheveled. Donna was dressed in her elaborate dinner host outfit, wearing pearl necklaces, her face red with indignant rage.

"I don't care about your hospital policies!" Donna was screaming at a head nurse. "My daughter-in-law is an unstable, dramatic woman who—"

Donna froze.

Brian stopped dead in his tracks.

Vance Montgomery had stepped into the middle of the hallway, blocking their path. He stood with his hands folded behind his back, his presence radiating an aura of absolute, crushing authority.

Brian’s face went pale. "Uncle... Uncle Vance?"

Donna swallowed hard, her arrogant posture instantly slumping. "Vance? What... what are you doing here? You haven't been back to this city in fifteen years!"

Vance took three slow steps forward. The security guards immediately stepped back, recognizing the man whose name was engraved on the hospital’s primary pediatric wing foundation plaque.

"Brian," Vance spoke, his voice dangerously low. "You struck your wife in front of your child."

Brian stammered, looking frantically between his mother and his uncle. "Uncle Vance, you don't understand! Clara exaggerated everything! She was making a scene in front of Mom’s guests over a minor fever! She disrespects Mom constantly! I just... I lost my temper for a second—"

"A minor fever?" Vance interrupted, his eyes narrowing like steel blades. "Lily’s core temperature was 104 degrees upon arrival. She was twenty minutes away from a febrile seizure."

Donna stepped forward, trying to put on her fake, charming smile. "Vance, dear, you know how emotional young mothers get. Clara is always trying to make me look like a bad grandmother. We had twelve distinguished guests at the house! She was supposed to cook the main courses! It was a family obligation!"

Vance looked at Donna as if she were a piece of trash stuck to his shoe.

"Donna," Vance said smoothly. "Fifteen years ago, I cut ties with you and your late husband because your arrogance and cruelty destroyed everything you touched. I allowed Brian to borrow capital from my holding firm because I believed he had inherited his father’s work ethic. I was mistaken."

Brian’s eyes widened in horror. "Borrow capital? What are you talking about?"

"You didn't know?" Vance smiled coldly, looking at his nephew. "Your firm, Vance Montgomery Architecture, does not belong to you, Brian. Ninety percent of your corporate credit line, your office lease, and your primary commercial projects are underwritten by Montgomery International Holdings. My firm."

Brian looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He turned to his mother. "Mom... you told me our seed money came from Dad’s private trust!"

Donna couldn't answer. She looked at the floor, cold sweat breaking across her neck.

"Your mother lied to you, Brian," Vance revealed mercilessly. "She embezzled $400,000 from your father's estate before he died, and I quietly covered the debt to protect Clara and Lily’s future. But tonight... you laid your hand on Clara’s face."

Vance pulled a black fountain pen from his coat pocket and handed a white envelope to Attorney Sterling.

"As of 10:00 PM tonight," Vance declared, "Montgomery International Holdings is recalling all commercial credit lines issued to Vance Montgomery Architecture. Foreclosure proceedings on your office building will begin at 8:00 AM tomorrow."

"No!" Brian shrieked, taking a step forward. "Uncle Vance! You can't do this! That’s my entire life! I have thirty employees! We have a $5 million commercial contract signing on Friday!"

"You had a life, Brian," Vance corrected him, stepping back toward Lily’s room. "Now you have legal liabilities. Officers, escort these two off the premises. If either of them approaches this floor again, have them arrested for criminal trespass."

Four uniformed police officers stepped out from the elevator bay, placing their hands on their belts as they moved toward Brian and Donna.

"Don't touch me!" Donna screamed as an officer grabbed her arm. "Clara! You witch! You ruined my family!"

May you like

Brian stood frozen as the officers forced his weeping, hysterical mother toward the elevators. He looked at the glass window of Lily’s room, meeting my eyes through the glass.

I didn't look away. I didn't cry. I simply pulled the blinds closed, shutting him out of my life forever.
