Chapter 5 - The Return of the Inventory

Lucas ran to the front door, pulling it open with a mix of dread and anger.
Standing in the private elevator foyer was Willow.
She no longer wore the ice-blue silk gown or the delicate diamond earrings. She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. On her cheek, a faint shadow of the bruise remained, but her eyes were bright, clear, and utterly devoid of fear.
Standing beside her was Victoria Vance—Chicago's most feared corporate litigator—accompanied by two federal marshals holding official court summonses.
Behind them stood Michael Donovan, wearing a sharp black suit that broad shoulders carried with absolute authority.
"Willow?" Lucas gasped, stepping back into the foyer. "What... what is this?"
Willow didn't answer him. She walked past him into the penthouse as if he were invisible, stepping directly into the main living room where Richard sat paralyzed at the dining table.
"Good morning, Richard," Willow said calmly, setting a leather briefcase on the glass coffee table. "I believe you mentioned last night that I came from nothing."
Richard stood up slowly, his hands shaking as he leaned against the mahogany table. "You... you snake. You used my son to get into this family!"
"Actually, Richard," Victoria Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of certified legal filings from her briefcase, "your son was simply the convenient idiot who brought Willow into the one place where she could access your private corporate ledgers."
Lucas's head snapped toward Willow in utter shock. "Willow? What is she talking about?"
Willow turned to look at her husband—the man who had struck her twelve hours ago.
"For five years, Lucas, you thought I was sitting at home organizing flower arrangements and running a little art gallery," Willow said softly, her voice cool and steady as ice. "You never wondered why I asked to see the company's annual audited reports. You never wondered why I studied the corporate structure of Sterling Infrastructure. You thought I was too stupid to understand business."
She took a step closer to him.
"I am a master of fine arts, Lucas," Willow continued. "But my minor at State was corporate forensic accounting. I spent five years documenting every single royalty payment Sterling Enterprises hid from my father."
"You... you spied on us?" Marion shrieked from the hallway, clutching her silk robe.
"I protected my father's legacy," Willow corrected sharply, turning her fierce gaze onto Marion. "The same father you called a 'grease-monkey.' The same father whose inventions paid for this penthouse, your diamonds, your private jets, and the very champagne you poured down your throats last night."
Victoria Vance stepped up to Richard, slapping the federal court summons directly onto his chest.
"Richard Sterling," Victoria announced loudly, "you are hereby served with a four-hundred-million-dollar patent infringement suit, a federal RICO conspiracy indictment, and a freeze order on all personal and corporate bank accounts held by the Sterling family."
Richard collapsed back into his chair, gasping for air as his chest heaved violently. "This is absurd! My lawyers will have this thrown out by noon!"
"Your lawyers won't even answer your calls by noon, Richard," Michael Donovan spoke up, his deep voice filling the room like thunder. "Because thirty minutes ago, United Steel's original board members provided the Department of Justice with the original 1985 audio recordings of you admitting to forging my signature."

Michael walked over to Richard, leaning down until he was looking directly into the old man's terrified eyes.
"You took thirty years of my life, Richard," Michael whispered coldly. "Now I'm taking everything you built."
