Chapter 5 - The Bank Vault Trap

The main branch of First National Bank in downtown Columbus was an architectural fortress built in the 1920s, featuring soaring granite pillars, polished brass gates, and a subterranean safety deposit vault protected by two-ton steel doors.
At 2:15 PM the following afternoon, a tall man wearing a dark trench coat, a pulled-down baseball cap, and dark sunglasses hurried through the bank's revolving doors.
It was Julian.
He looked gaunt, his face covered in three days of dark stubble, his skin yellowed and sweat-stained under the fluorescent lights. He clutched a crumpled brown paper bag under his arm, his eyes darting frantically from teller to teller like a hunted animal.
Thirty minutes earlier, his attorney had received an "anonymous tip" from an insider at the IRS stating that a federal warrant had been signed to freeze all safety deposit boxes associated with Agnes Thorne’s maiden name starting at 3:00 PM.
Julian had panicked. Just as I predicted, he couldn't afford to lose his final bargaining chip.
He rushed toward the staircase leading down to the basement vault, nodding curtly to the elderly security guard sitting behind the desk.
"Safety deposit box 412," Julian rasped, his voice hoarse, presenting a fake state ID card bearing his mother’s maiden name and a stolen key.
The vault attendant, a quiet young woman, looked at the ID, then at Julian’s nervous, sweating face. "Right this way, sir."
She led him through the massive steel vault door into the quiet, chilly room lined with thousands of gleaming brass deposit boxes. She unlocked the outer lock of Box 412 with her master key, handed Julian the box, and stepped out, closing the heavy privacy gate behind her.
Julian’s hands were shaking so violently he nearly dropped the metal box onto the marble table. He inserted his key, turned it with a sharp click, and pulled open the lid.
Inside lay a single, sleek silver flash drive alongside three thick leather-bound journals that had belonged to my mother.
Julian let out a ragged, hysterical laugh. "Got you... you crazy bitch, I got you..."
He snatched the flash drive and reaching for the journals.
"Looking for these, Julian?"
Julian froze.
The heavy privacy gate swung open.
I walked into the vault room, flanked by two plainclothes detectives from the State Police financial crimes unit and Arthur Vance.
Julian’s face went completely grey. He stumbled back against the wall of deposit boxes, clutching the silver flash drive against his chest like a weapon. "You... how did you know I was here?!"
"Because I know how your mind works, Julian," I said, walking slowly toward him, my heels clicking softly on the marble floor. "You’re predictable. You’re greedy, you’re arrogant, and you’re terrified of being poor."
Julian backed into a corner, his eyes wild, looking around for an escape route. "Stay back! I’ll crush this drive under my shoe right now! I swear to God I’ll smash it to pieces! You’ll never know what Agnes did to your mother!"
"Go ahead," I said calmly, stepping closer.
Julian blinked, stunned. "What?"
"Smash it," I challenged him, stopping three feet away from him. "Go on. Step on it."
Julian raised his boot, holding the flash drive over the stone floor, his body shaking with unadulterated terror. "I’ll do it! I have nothing to lose!"
"You have everything to lose, Julian," Arthur Vance spoke up, pulling a white document from his coat. "Because that flash drive isn't the only copy."
Julian’s head whipped toward Arthur. "What?!"
"Three days ago, when we audited the server logs at Thorne Enterprises," Arthur explained with a cold, professional smile, "we discovered that your mother uploaded those exact same encrypted files to an off-site cloud storage account three months ago to use as blackmail against you in case you ever tried to remove her from the company board."
Julian stared at Arthur, his jaw dropping open in sheer horror. "Agnes... Agnes backed it up?"
"Agnes didn't trust you any more than you trusted her," I told him, looking down at his trembling, broken form. "You Thorne family members really are a poisonous bunch. You eat each other alive the moment things get difficult."
Julian looked from the flash drive in his hand to the two police detectives stepping forward with handcuffs held ready.
The silver drive slipped from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly onto the marble floor.
"Julian Thorne," the lead detective announced, grabbing Julian’s wrists and pulling them behind his back with a heavy metallic click. "You are under arrest for obstruction of justice, extortion, criminal conspiracy, and felony domestic violence."
As the detectives dragged Julian out of the vault, his boots dragging on the floor, he looked back at me one last time.
"Evelyn... please!" he sobbed, tears finally breaking through his greasy stubble, streaming down his pale cheeks. "I was wrong! I loved you! Please don't do this to me!"

I picked up my mother’s leather journals from the open box, holding them gently against my chest.
"You never loved me, Julian," I said softly as the vault doors began to close between us. "You loved my mother’s money. And now you have neither."
