Chapter 5 - The Forensic Autopsy

By the end of the second week, the forensic accounting team hired by Nora Sterling had completed their initial pass of Hale Development Group's books.

I sat in the conference room of Sterling & Associates, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers and spreadsheets. My father sat next to me, a quiet, reassuring presence.

"It's worse than we thought, Clara," Nora said, sliding a thick blue folder toward us. "Victor hasn't just been skimming. He’s been running what is essentially a corporate shell game to hide his personal expenses from his business partners and his tax filings."

"What did you find?" I asked.

"Over the last three years, Victor has used Hale Development's operating accounts to pay for over four hundred thousand dollars in personal luxury items," Nora explained, pointing to a series of highlighted transactions. "The country club membership in Cherry Hills, a private jet charter to Cabo for his brother's anniversary, and even the lease on that Mercedes-Benz he drives—all billed as 'business development expenses.'"

My father leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "And the Aurora project? The one he took my seven point five million for?"

"That's the smoking gun, Richard," Nora said, her face grim. "Victor used your investment as collateral to secure a secondary loan from a private lender in Miami—a group called 'Sovereign Capital.' He told them the Whitmore funds were 'permanent equity' and would not be withdrawn. When you pulled your money, it triggered a default clause in the Sovereign contract."

"Which means?" I asked.

"Which means Sovereign Capital has the right to seize the Aurora property immediately," Nora said. "And because Victor signed a personal guarantee on that loan, they can go after his personal estate to cover the remaining balance. He’s looking at personal bankruptcy, Clara. Within thirty days, he will lose the house, the cars, the Vail property—everything."

I looked at the numbers on the page. For years, Victor had made me feel like I was a burden, like my simple lifestyle and my focus on Ethan’s happiness were dragging him down. He had controlled every penny, making me ask for permission to buy groceries, while he was quietly spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on his brother’s family and his own vanity.

"Let them take it," I said, my voice steady. "I don't want the house. I don't want the cars. I just want Ethan's safety and our freedom."

"You'll get both, Clara," my father said, patting my hand. "But Victor is going to pay every single dollar he owes you. I'm going to make sure of it."

The door to the conference room opened, and Evelyn, my father’s assistant, stepped in. She looked slightly pale.

"Richard, Clara," she said. "We have a situation. Victor is outside. He's trying to get into the building, and he’s... he’s not in a good state."
